Ridgewood NJ, Panda diplomacy is back in action! Two 3-year-old giant pandas have officially started their journey from China to the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, DC, where they will reside for the next decade.

The male panda, Bao Li (pronounced “BOW-lee”), and the female, Qing Bao (pronounced “ching-BOW”), are the latest pandas to arrive under a 52-year-old conservation partnership between China and the US. These adorable cubs will go through a 30-day quarantine before making their public debut. The Smithsonian Zoo will pay approximately $1 million annually for their care.

The arrival of Bao Li and Qing Bao follows last year’s departure of two iconic adult pandas, Tian Tian and Mei Xiang, along with their son Xiao Qi Ji (pronounced “t-YEN t-YEN,” “may-SHONG,” and “SHIAU-chi-ji”). Their return to China marked the end of one chapter of panda diplomacy, but the arrival of these new cubs opens an exciting new one.

Panda diplomacy has a long history, starting in 1972 when China gifted the first giant pandas to the US as a symbol of goodwill after President Richard Nixon’s landmark visit to the country. Since 1984, China has shifted from gifting to leasing pandas to zoos around the world. Today, at least 60 pandas are on lease in roughly 20 countries, including at the San Diego Zoo in the US.

These cultural and conservation partnerships not only highlight global cooperation but also help fund critical research and efforts to protect the endangered giant pandas. As the adorable cubs settle into their new home, panda lovers and zoo-goers alike eagerly await their public debut!
