Paramus NJ, the Paramus Police Department Traffic Unit has teamed up with the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Safety Unit to tackle a growing problem on Route 17: commercial vehicles unlawfully driving in the left lane.
New Jersey law (39:4-88) is clear: drivers must stay in the right lane unless passing or making a left turn. For trucks weighing 10,000 pounds or more, the rules are stricter—they’re banned from the leftmost lane altogether unless making a left turn. On Route 17 in Paramus, where left-turn exits don’t exist, trucks in the left lane violate this law daily, creating significant traffic and safety concerns.
Why This Enforcement Effort Matters
With the holiday season approaching, traffic on Paramus highways is expected to increase significantly. The presence of large trucks in the left lane not only slows traffic but also poses a danger to emergency responders who rely on that lane to navigate during critical situations.
Due to their size, trucks are less maneuverable and require more time to change lanes or make sudden stops. When they occupy the left lane, they can create unnecessary delays for first responders, potentially impacting life-saving efforts.
What Drivers Should Know
As part of this joint enforcement effort, drivers found violating the “stay right” law will face tickets. The goal is to enhance safety and ensure smoother traffic flow during one of the busiest times of the year.
If you’re a truck driver, remember:
Stay out of the left lane unless you’re making a left turn (which isn’t an option on Route 17 in Paramus).
Follow lane discipline to help keep the roads safe for everyone.
By adhering to these laws, drivers can help reduce congestion and ensure that emergency vehicles have the access they need when every second counts.

How about cracking down on those ambulances from NY state that blast through using lights and sirens that are really just limousines that go to the diamond district from upstate NY. They are a HAZARD and are gaming the system. They are from 45 minutes north of here and if they were really used for medical patients they would stop at the hospital in suffern. its a disgrace nothing has been done to stop this scam
And why is Paramus police doing this, why isn’t Bergen county sheriffs department or the state doing this? It’s a state highway not a local road.
for da money
I was going to bring this up. The “ambulances” tailgate down Route 17 with sirens and lights flashing.
In a real emergency they would go to a nearby hospital. These ambulances could stop at several good hospitals but they continue their dangerous journey.
Is it legal to operate an ambulance this way?
They are scamming the system by using ambulances as a limousine and taxi. Nobody in law enforcement will touch them at the risk of being accused of ‘profiling’ them. Since they begin their journey over state lines, no NJ law enforcement has jurisdiction to watch them pick up their ‘passengers’ for the trip.. Its been given to the print media as a good local story but they won’t touch it. Maybe a local TV station would have the balls to run the story. I would not get out of their way when they come blasting down the highway
