Park Ridge NJ, a woman is recovering in a hotel room after a tree crashed through her Bergen County home during Wednesday’s storms, injuring her and making the house uninhabitable.
A Night of Chaos
On Wednesday night, thunderstorms swept through the area, causing significant damage. Park Ridge Police Captain Joseph Rampolla detailed the incident, explaining how the woman was injured.
“The female victim was sitting on the couch in the first-floor living room watching TV with her dog next to her,” he said. “A very large tree fell, striking the northwest side of the structure. It crashed through the upstairs floor and the first-floor ceiling. The woman was struck in the head by falling debris from the ceiling.”
Immediate Response
The incident occurred around 8:37 p.m., prompting a swift response from local authorities. The woman’s husband, who was upstairs in a non-impacted area of the house, rushed downstairs when he heard the crash.
“He could barely see through all the dust and sheetrock that had been crushed,” Rampolla noted. “He moved her to an unaffected area of the house and started to provide medical aid.”
Sgt. Anthony DiBlasi and Officer John Gleason were the first on the scene and immediately began first aid, as the woman’s head wound was bleeding profusely. Tri-Boro Ambulance then transported her to Hackensack University Medical Center, where she was treated and subsequently released.
Temporary Relocation
For now, the family is staying in a hotel. Fortunately, the dog was uninjured in the incident.
The severe thunderstorms that hit just before 9 p.m. caused widespread disruptions, and this incident highlights the dangers that such weather can bring.
