NEWARK, NJ — A tense Memorial Day standoff outside the Delaney Hall immigration detention facility escalated into chaos on Monday, drawing heavy criticism from federal officials who accused New Jersey’s top Democratic leaders of orchestrating a “political stunt.”

The demonstration, organized by immigration activists in support of detainees reportedly staging a hunger strike, saw high-profile appearances from New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill, U.S. Senator Andy Kim, U.S. Senator Cory Booker, Representative LaMonica McIver, and Representative Robert Menendez Jr. However, what began as a political rally quickly devolved into a confrontation involving human chains, barricades, and riot police.

The Protest and Law Enforcement Escalation

Throughout Monday, May 25, 2026, demonstrators attempted to disrupt operations at the privately operated Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility by forming human chains, blocking entry points, and erecting makeshift barricades.

As tensions peaked, federal law enforcement agents in riot gear deployed crowd-control measures to clear the exit and entry routes.

Senator Andy Kim Claims Injury

Following the incident, Senator Andy Kim claimed he was injured by breathing in fumes from pepper balls fired into the crowd. Kim publicly criticized the federal administration’s handling of the situation, utilizing terms like “chaos” and “lawlessness” to describe the law enforcement response.

Critics, however, argue that the presence of high-ranking Democratic politicians served to inflame an already volatile situation. Furthermore, questions were raised regarding Governor Sherrill’s early departure from the scene, with some wondering if she had advanced warning of the police response from her security detail.

DHS Fights Back: “A Political Stunt for Fundraising Clicks”

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) sharply rejected the narrative pushed by the demonstrators and New Jersey politicians.

In an official statement, DHS directly disputed Senator Kim’s claims regarding the deployment of force, clarifying that no individuals were directly struck by pepper ball projectiles.

Official DHS Statement: > “On May 25, 2026, rioters obstructed law enforcement from exiting the ICE facility. Officers issued multiple lawful verbal commands for rioters to clear the area. Rioters refused to follow law enforcement commands and continued to obstruct the exit route. Our law enforcement followed their training and used the minimum amount of force necessary to protect themselves, the public, and federal property. The First Amendment protects speech and peaceful assembly – not rioting.”

Federal Officials Defend Delaney Hall Conditions

Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis dismissed the allegations of poor conditions and downplayed reports of a hunger strike inside the Newark facility.

Federal Stance (DHS / Acting Sec. Bis) State Politician Stance (Gov. Sherrill / Sen. Kim)
Characterized the protest as a dangerous riot and a “political stunt for fundraising clicks.” Called the protest a necessary stand against “inhumane and unconstitutional” conditions.
Stated no pepper balls directly struck individuals; minimal force was used to clear exits. Claimed law enforcement escalated tensions and caused injuries via chemical fumes.
Urged local leaders to thank ICE for “removing murderers, rapists, and drug traffickers.” Reiterated long-standing opposition to private detention facilities and called for the closure of Delaney Hall.

The aggressive back-and-forth underscores the deepening national divide over immigration enforcement as federal agencies expand deportation efforts and local sanctuary state politicians step up their resistance.

  1. Where was Spartacus ?

    1. I am Spartacus.

  2. Lefties in the Blog (I know we have one or two). Please explain how the deportation of illegal immigrants, which until recently was a mainstream thing, suddenly became something you go to the ends of the earth to prevent? Please really try and put an argument together instead of your usual downvote, which is the Blog equivalent of pressing a doorbell and running away.

It gets no more disgusting than these dirt bag Democrats staging a political stunt against American law enforcement officers protecting us from illegal invaders, on a weekend that was meant to honor those fallen American soldiers of ALL races and religions who died to preserve our freedom from tyranny and foreign invaders.
