Readers debate when it appropriate to correct inappropriate behavior of someone else s children

reader says speaking of Graydon, I was there recently and observed several children (individually and in groups) absolutely terrorizing a mother duck and her 4 ducklings in the water and on the shore.

When I asked a lifeguard why she was allowing children to abuse the waterfowl, she told me that the ducks were not wanted there anyway so what was the big deal.

So because the ducks aren’t wanted at Graydon, the Village is condoning their abuse?

How nice. What a lesson to teach our children.

readers responds did you think that it was the parent’s responsibility to teach the children? Were you afraid to approach the parents with your superior knowledge of appropriate behavior?

The lifeguards are not there to teach your kids right from wrong. That is the parents job. Maybe the parents would have thanked you for your insights, then again, maybe not.

  1. The next time I see the lifeguards condoning animal abuse, I’m calling the ASPCA.

  2. Lifeguards are not there to deal with know-it-all adults. The children who were terrorizing the ducks should have been supervised by an adult. If the complainer really wanted to make a difference he/she should have approached the parents.

Of course approaching a parent to point out their children’s bad behavior is risky business. It is easier to approach a teen lifeguard and complain when the lifeguard does not respond as you would like.

  3. Put the blame on the idiotic parents for the lack of supervision.

  4. Parents are to blame and I would have scolded them and said out loud Where are this kids parents! Who lets their kids do something like this!

  5. I saw this happen, too. It was horrible to witness – the mother and the babies were screeching and trying their best to get away from these brats. One of the little babies got separated from the family and this caused more chaos. I ran to the kids and yelled at them to stop. Several other parents did, too. The guard paid no attention to any of this. And, no parent of the kids showed up – none. Who knows where the parents were?????

The guards used to get on their loudspeakers and yell at kids to leave the ducks alone.

    1. Don’t blame the guards for not disciplining someone’s children. They did not listen to the other parents, why would they listen to teenagers?

  6. Is it really that hard for any adult to yell to the kids “knock it off!!!”

  7. Torturing defenseless animals is often the first step in becoming a serial killer. Fact.

  8. So…some kids were messing with (as is their wont) some animals, and some adults eventually told them to knock it off.

    Slow news day at Graydon?

  9. If you saw children tormenting another child, would you wait for someone else to step in or say “Stop it!”?
