They will begin issuing summonses for violations of the new Recycling policy just like they did with the leaves. A new way to make money for the parking garage. Hold onto your wallets!

“The level of fees is under siege and has actually decreased 18% over the last 3 years from $332,552 to $266,232; a further decline is anticipated in 2016.”

The residents are the ones under siege here in Ridgewood; not fees. But I get your logic since you intend to raise my parking fees by 400% this summer to support the county garage.

If you happen to watch the recycle refuse being collected it is not uncommon to watch it be all be loaded into the same exact collection gate on the truck. We spend time separating the papers into different bins only to watch them get dumped into the same place.

I did ask the driver one time about this and he said they had reached the limit and it did not matter too much on paper differences.

At the end of the day seems like a simple jobs program with unmeasured results

It’s another simple edict: do as we say or the fines will continue. Years back when the Village was going to stop hauling the BoE garbage, they offered to do it for a price. (Around $125k/yr, I think) The BoE put out a bid for quotes and it resulted in a hauler taking it for about half the price. I am not attacking our hard-working village employees but for Roberta to say ‘give us only pristine garbage’ is absurd.

Let’s start by removing the Garbage from Village Hall…

Conveniently it meets there every other Wednesday night and sometimes by appointment if you are a special interest or campaign contributor.

Or you can just remember to vote in this coming election so you don’t have to get the stink of these skunks on you.

  1. They said not to put plastic bags in the recycling cans. How hard is that? And when was it acceptable to throw plastic bags in the can?

  2. The people that collect the recycling should not take any cans if they see plastic bags, which i see in many containers when you drive around town.

  3. Just follow the rules and there no problem. Don’t be lazy

  4. It may not entirely be laziness, but more like confusion that accepting plastic does not mean “all plastic.”

  5. As a member of REAC I would like to respond to this article. Paper recycling has been single stream for several years. It does not need to be separated at the curb. If you bring it to the Recycle Center you need to separate different papers.
Single use plastic bags are a problem in several ways. They are not recycled and they jam the equipment that processes the recyclables. Even if you take them to a grocery store for “recycling” they are more than likely just thrown away. Single use plastic bags are made from oil. They are manufactured and transported so you can use them once (if they don’t break first). This comes at a price. The bags do not decompose, they will be around longer than this blog. They clog our streams, green spaces, and land fills. Chemicals from plastics can be found in your bloodstream.. Enough plastic already. The simple, environmental and economical solution is to use your own REUSABLE bags. It is common practice is Asia, Europe and yes in several cities and towns in the USA. Join our effort to make Ridgewood cleaner and GREENER. REAC (Ridgewood Environmental Advisory Committee) challenges you to make a difference and just BAG IT and use those reusable bags.
For more information the movie BAG IT is available at the library.

  6. Monica, can you explain why papers are single stream if picked up, but multiple stream if brought to Recycling. I follow this rule, but I don’t understand why.

  7. You know what roberta . Blame it on mr spano for this. good for you, you and a few other must like his do do he sells to u.

  8. You can,t make me do it. I through it all mixed, I don’t give a dam.

  9. WELL TAKE IT OUT OF MR SPANO,S PAY. YOU GAVE HIM A FAT RAISE IN 2016. WHY WHY WHY WE ALL SAY. HAHAHA THAT”S WHAT YOU GET FOR PUTTING TRUST INTO SOME ONE THAT IS THE KING OF B S ‘ WAKE UP. YOU ARE IN IT WITH HIM. HUMMMMMMMMMMMM, OR ARE YOU JUST IN THE DARK.

  10. I just got back from Stop & Shop in Wyckoff, where I took my own fabric tote bags inside and did not use any plastic ones. I keep the bags in the back of my car all the time and try to remember to take them inside any supermarket that doesn’t have paper bags at all: Stop & Shop, Acme (formerly A&P), Market Basket (Franklin Lakes). Only Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s use only paper bags. It’s a slightly different mindset but I got used to it and it’s easy enough. I hate those single-use bags, which are finally starting to be banned in California, etc. Eventually it will happen here–one hopes before the entire planet is covered in them.

  11. just throw it all in the garbage
