Newark NJ, A demonstration outside a major New Jersey detention facility escalated into violence on June 5, 2026, resulting in federal charges against an out-of-state resident. Federal authorities announced that an Arizona woman has been arrested and charged after allegedly defying orders and punching a Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agent squarely in the face.

The incident, which took place during crowd-control operations at the Delaney Hall Detention Facility in Newark, has sparked strong rebukes from federal prosecutors regarding violence directed at law enforcement during public demonstrations.

Escalation at Delaney Hall Detention Facility

According to federal court documents, HSI special agents and officers were actively conducting perimeter enforcement and managing crowd control near the U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE) facility. Law enforcement personnel were tasked with keeping the access roads clear so emergency and tactical transport vehicles could safely enter and exit the grounds.

The sequence of events leading to the federal arrest unfolded as follows:

  • Disobeying Orders: At approximately 6:30 p.m., special agents observed the suspect pacing back and forth past the facility’s main entrance. Despite receiving multiple verbal commands to step back from the secure perimeter, she refused to comply.

  • Breaching the Perimeter: As a convoy of law enforcement vehicles attempted to pull into Delaney Hall, the suspect tried to push past an HSI special agent toward the moving vehicles. The agent physically pulled her back, explicitly stating she could not walk that way.

  • The Physical Assault: Disregarding the final directive, the suspect pushed past the perimeter line. When the special agent pursued her and attempted to detain her, the suspect abruptly spun around and delivered a closed-fist punch directly to the agent’s face, causing visible lacerations to the officer’s upper and lower lips.

Federal Charges, Video Evidence, and Legal Penalties

The suspect has been identified by federal officials as Mariano Anthony Perez, 31, of Phoenix, Arizona. Perez was formally charged by criminal complaint with forcibly assaulting a federal officer involving physical contact. She made her initial legal appearance before United States Magistrate Judge Leda Dunn Wettre in Newark federal court on June 8, 2026.

Federal prosecutors revealed that the entire physical altercation was captured from multiple angles. Investigators have secured clear video footage of the assault sourced from both public social media accounts and fixed municipal pole cameras in the immediate area.

Severity of the Federal Offense

The charge of assaulting a federal law enforcement officer carrying out official duties is a severe criminal offense. If convicted, Perez faces:

  • A maximum potential penalty of 8 years in federal imprisonment

  • A maximum fine of $250,000

Federal Officials Vow Strict Prosecution

U.S. Attorney Robert Frazer and regional HSI leadership released strong statements indicating that physical obstruction and violent acts during what are meant to be peaceful protests will face immediate legal consequences.

“Assaulting law enforcement officers is unacceptable. Period,” stated U.S. Attorney Robert Frazer. “Federal officers must be able to carry out their responsibilities without being subjected to violence, intimidation, or obstruction. This Office will continue to prosecute those who assault officers and interfere with the lawful execution of their duties.”

The investigation was spearheaded by special agents of HSI Newark, under the direction of Acting Special Agent in Charge Spiros Karabinas. The government’s case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jake A. Nasar of the Criminal Division in Newark.
