Review: Bank on the Seafood at Fish Urban Dining in Ridgewood

FISH

By SHIVANI VORAJAN. 2, 2016

It would not be an exaggeration to say that the setting of Fish Urban Dining is striking. Situated in a former Bank of America branch on East Ridgewood Avenue, the restaurant has 30-foot-high ceilings with six huge chandeliers, and its sleek dining room extends into what was the bank’s vault, complete with a five-ton steel door.

Jim and Karen DeGilio, the married couple who own the restaurant and a second Fish Urban Dining, in Asbury Park, opened their Ridgewood place in July. It has been packed ever since. It has high-quality seafood, attentive service and some excellent nonaquatic dishes, too.

“We pride ourselves on serving fresh, uncomplicated seafood with fair prices in a comfortable, fun setting,” Mr. DeGilio said in a phone interview following my visits.

Dave Symniuk, the executive chef at both locations, has worked with the couple for over a decade and oversees a team of cooks that handles day-to-day preparations.

  1. Actually, I hear it’s terrible.

  2. It’s horrible inside. Like a vault for the dead; really dreary. Good luck to them.

  3. There are certain businesses in Ridgewood that start-up and you just know they won’t last. Way too much overhead as compared to what they appear to be taking in is key. Fish is one of those places. Of course, it all depends upon how much appetite for red ink the investors have, but I give this place less than a year.

  4. Went last night for the third time and they continue to get better. My wife and i enjoyed our meal very much and will go again.

  5. Yea you got that right 4:27…never gonna make it.

  6. I wonder if all of the negative posts are coming from a nearby competitor.

  7. I have been to the bar a few times. Breat drink specials and bar menu.

I love the building and atmosphere.

  8. A fair blog question, 6:38, but I can vouch for my comment at 2:20, which is innocent of same. Wish I owned a restaurant, but I don’t, nor am I related to anyone who does, etc. I was reporting on comments from friends.

  9. We went early on and it was expensive but pretty good. Looks like a nice place to meet people for a drink too. Atmosphere is pretty cool. Good luck to them.

  10. 2:20, you are a wet noodle. This place should be celebrated

  11. Pricey, but that doesn’t seem to deter as it continues to draw crowds. Service was very good, food was pretty good
in my recent visit. To the naysayers–this building was empty for years, so at least someone is making use of this prime real estate and amazing structure.
