RIDGEWOOD – The Village Council, after hours of debate that included allegations of harassment, has voted to eliminate a residency requirement for most civilian hires.

The 3-2 vote at the Wednesday council meeting ended weeks of often contentious discussion on the change and opened up all municipal positions not affiliated with the police and fire departments to applicants statewide.

Councilwoman Susan Knudsen and Councilman Mike Sedon cast the two dissenting votes, arguing that village openings should be filled with qualified village residents.

“I have faith in our residents,” Sedon explained. “Getting rid of this [residency requirement] is a disservice to the town.”

Mayor Paul Aronsohn, Deputy Mayor Al Pucciarelli and Councilwoman Gwenn Hauck all insisted that the village would benefit most from hiring the best possible candidates for each position, regardless of their address.

  3. Does the revised law have immediate effect or only on available jobs posted after the change in the law?

  4. The 3 to 2 vote indicates that the Village employee attorney had not made it clear as to any Civil Service requirements of posting of details etc.

  5. hummmmm the 3 we know who they are.

  6. How about we ease the residency requirements for mayor and council so we can get the best candidates for those positions also.

  7. Maybe you hit on something 5:51

  8. We know why so many nearby municipalities eased or eliminated their residential preference requirements, Roberta: They want access to the vast untapped market of Ridgewood-based talent who never learn of so many open and attractive positions in our Village because they are not included in the local “friends and family” plan (i.e., local email distribution to municipal email addresses only).

  9. well people I herd some one called the state civil service hot line today. they are coming up next week to hand out warning slips to the manager crew for not flowing labor laws in nj civil service laws. fines will be hand’ed out to one’s who break the law. the games must stop now. the next step is the new’s will come in to town. ch 7 on my side will love to do a story on this.
