The annual village employee holiday party will once again take place outside of Ridgewood, a notion that has been a growing sore spot in the minds of some elected officials and residents who had hoped to keep the celebration local. As they have done in previous years, village staffers will venture into Hawthorne next month for their workplace gala.

“I don’t understand how we’re not able to do this party in Ridgewood, with all the restaurants that we have,” Mayor Paul Aronsohn said during a council meeting earlier this month, further stressing his ongoing penchant to patronize a village business with the partially taxpayer-subsidized event.

After sending out a questionnaire to 15 Ridgewood establishments, officials at Village Hall received only three responses from those interested in hosting the holiday get-together, according to acting Village Manager Heather Mailander. The manager’s office opened up the search to village restaurants and non-profit groups with rental halls, but none of the proposals that were delivered entirely fulfilled Ridgewood’s needs and requests.

  1. Holiday parties are extremely rare these days, having been phased out due to cost considerations. I find it somewhat outrageous that taxpayers are on the hook for this. I don’t care how simple the event is, how can we justify it when cuts are being made in Village programs?

  2. Maybe our new Mayor will reach into his pocket and pay for it.

  3. Those that attend the party should and i assume pay for the party and that NO village funds be used.

  4. partially taxpayer funded? if not in ridgewood our tax dollars should not be used, period.

  5. Have a party! Why is everyone playing Scrooge?

  6. Employees pay for the party themselves no taxpayer funds are used

  7. People are ready to jump all over the village employees without even knowing the details.

I may not like dealing with some employees but a holiday party is a special once a year event. Let them have it.

  8. The article says it is being partially funded by the taxpayer. Scrooge? Let them have it? Tell that to the families who have had a family member lose a Village job due to cutbacks.

  9. who shows up pay;s the bill , end of the story. do you think the village will pay for a party for the workers, never. may be for the fire and police.

  10. When I worked for the village we paid 35 to 40 a person, and the party was paid for by the employees and the cops union paid for the alcohol so that no public funds were used to purchase liquor

  11. I’m laughing that Mayor Aronsohn is so upset that this party isn’t being held in Ridgewood. He is the link to the Chamber of Commerce. He should have been all over this after he complained about it so much for the past several years. This is called passing the buck! Blame others is his motto.

  12. Let them have the party at whatever venue offers the best deal.

The cost of the party has nothing to do with layoffs. Let them have a party it is good for morale. Does everyone have to be miserable?

  13. HAVE IT AT VILLAGE HALL AT THE FIRST FLOOR.

  14. There seems to be little point in discussing the issue of who pays any further. Either the reporter is right or some anonymous commenter in right. Personally, my money’s on the reporter, but that’s just me.
