Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood Professional Firefighters FMBA Local 47 A Platoon responded to a potentially deadly carbon monoxide (CO) alarm at a mixed-use commercial and residential building, highlighting the ongoing risks of gas-powered equipment use indoors.

Investigation Reveals Improper Use of Gas Equipment

Upon arrival, Ridgewood Fire Department personnel discovered that a company had been using gas-powered backpack blowers and a power washer in the building’s basement, which created dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide. The building was immediately evacuated and then ventilated to restore safe air quality levels.

Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, thanks to the fast response and safety protocols in place.

Important Safety Reminder from Ridgewood Fire Department

This incident serves as a critical public safety reminder:

  • Never use gas-powered appliances indoors, including power washers and blowers.

  • If using them outside, keep windows and doors closed to prevent CO from entering the building.

  • Ensure that carbon monoxide detectors are installed and functioning properly in both residential and commercial spaces.

Know the Signs of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Carbon monoxide poisoning is dangerous because it is odorless and colorless. Common symptoms include:

  • Headache

  • Dizziness

  • Weakness

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Chest pain

  • Confusion

In severe cases, exposure can cause loss of consciousness, seizures, heart arrhythmias, or death. The often-mentioned “cherry red” skin tone is rare and typically seen only in postmortem cases.

Ridgewood Fire Department Stresses Community Awareness

The Ridgewood Fire Department urges all residents and business owners to review proper equipment usage guidelines and prioritize air quality safety. Having functioning carbon monoxide detectors can be the difference between life and death.
