RIDGEWOOD, NJ – The spirit of sacrifice and service was alive and well in New York City this September, thanks to the dedicated members of Ridgewood Professional Firefighters FMBA Local 47. The local unit laced up their running shoes to participate in the iconic annual Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk, a moving tribute to the heroism displayed on September 11, 2001.
This event is more than just a race; it’s a powerful commemoration that retraces the final, courageous steps of FDNY firefighter Stephen Siller.
Retracing a Hero’s Final Steps
The Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk honors Stephen Siller, who, after hearing the news of the September 11th attacks, strapped on 60 pounds of gear and ran through the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel (formerly the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel) to reach the World Trade Center. Siller ultimately gave his life that day, cementing his status as a symbol of profound courage and selflessness.
For the members of Ridgewood Firefighters FMBA Local 47, participating is a deeply personal commitment.
“It’s an honor to be part of an event that remembers the ultimate sacrifice of Stephen Siller and so many others,” said one Ridgewood firefighter involved in the run.
The Local 47 Run Team: Fitness, Family, and Brotherhood
This year’s event was a special milestone for the Local 47 Run Team. First formed during the local Ridgewood Run in May, the Tunnel to Towers 5K marked their second major event together.
The team embodies the spirit of community service and camaraderie, including several Ridgewood firefighters as well as their spouses, blending fitness goals with a commitment to giving back. Though the whole group couldn’t get together for a perfect finish line photo, every member finished the challenging course in a show of endurance and dedication.
Supporting the Tunnel to Towers Foundation
The funds raised by participants like the Ridgewood Firefighters directly support the crucial work of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. Established in Stephen Siller’s honor, the foundation is dedicated to providing support for first responders, military members, and their families.
The foundation’s major initiatives include:
- Building mortgage-free smart homes for catastrophically injured veterans.
- Building mortgage-free homes for Gold Star families.
- Funding programs to support frontline heroes nationwide.
A massive thank you goes out to everyone who supported and donated to the cause. Your generosity helps ensure the legacies of our heroes live on.
