Ridgewood NJ, The Applied Engineering Club at Ridgewood High School submitted eight team entries to the New Jersey STEAM Tank Invention Competition this year, and all of the teams have been designated as regional finalists. The five teams who were named finalists in last year’s regional competition will also be advancing the next round of the competition, as it was canceled last year due to the pandemic. Regional finalists will present their virtual pitch presentation in March, April and May, and the winners will be announced during the NJEA Convention next year.

In its second year, the Applied Engineering Club has quickly gained momentum and generated significant student interest. Of the eighty-one students who have actively participated in the club this year, 60 members are participating in the STEAM Tank Challenge, which is a testament to their interest in innovation given the challenges of working in a remote environment.

“The club has been so resourceful this pandemic year looking for opportunities and sharing their collective knowledge and resources to support each other,” said RHS teacher John Wohner.

The STEAM Tank Challenge was created and sponsored by The New Jersey School Boards Association and the United States Army to encourage innovation and inspire creativity in New Jersey’s public school students. This competition gives students the opportunity to identify a real-world problem and apply science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) to develop a solution. Special awards are presented for Innovative Use of Technology, Entrepreneurship Subject Matter Expert Collaboration, Creativity and the Exemplar Integration of the Arts, Societal, Social and Emotional Impact, Improvement to the Human Built Environment, and Sustainability.

All of the team project videos can be viewed on the Super Science Saturday website during the month of March. Visit SuperScienceSaturday.org.
