Ridgewood NJ, the Ridgewood High School Band Program is widely recognized as one of New Jersey’s top-tier music programs and the largest in Bergen County, with over 200 students participating each year. Offering a robust array of curricular and co-curricular ensembles, the program provides students with a structured and comprehensive music education, nurturing talent while maintaining exceptional standards of performance.
From concert band to jazz ensemble, chamber music to marching band, the Ridgewood High School Band has consistently earned superior ratings at festivals and competitions across the country. The program’s reputation for musical excellence is matched only by the character and leadership qualities of the students who pass through its ranks.
With a rich history spanning over a century, the band has reached new heights in the past decade, performing at prestigious venues like Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, Washington, D.C.’s Jack Morton Auditorium, and Madison Square Garden in New York City. The band has also showcased its talent at prominent universities such as Harvard, George Mason, and the University of Southern California, collaborating with renowned composers, conductors, and performers along the way.
The Band Program is a cornerstone of Ridgewood High School’s award-winning music department, which was twice named a Grammy Arts School. In addition, Ridgewood has been recognized as one of the “Best Communities for Music Education in America” by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM), thanks in part to the band’s contributions. Other notable achievements include NJAJE Finalist status for both jazz ensembles, multiple appearances at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s Young Musicians Concert, and a top-five finish for the Marching Band at the USBands National Championships.
Individually, members of the Ridgewood High School Band are regularly selected to perform in honors ensembles at the county, regional, and state levels, further showcasing the program’s ability to cultivate musical talent.
This year, the Ridgewood High School Marching Band premiered its 2024 show, “Teenage Wasteland,” during a preview performance attended by students, parents, alumni, and friends. The band’s hard work paid off at its first competition at Ramsey High School, where they secured first place with an impressive score of 78. They swept the caption awards, winning Best Music, Best Visual, Best Effect, Best Color Guard, and Best Percussion.
Next, the band is set to take its talents to Annapolis, MD, continuing its tradition of excellence and dedication to music education. Ridgewood High School’s Band Program remains a shining example of how a commitment to the arts can inspire young people and elevate a community.
