Ridgewood Hit-and-Run: Driver Abandons Electric Jeep After Demolishing Historic Building

Ridgewood, NJ — August 31, 2025: A hit-and-run crash in Ridgewood early Sunday morning left a possibly historic structure completely destroyed, and authorities are still searching for the driver.

According to Ridgewood Police, the crash occurred on East Glen Avenue near the Route 17 northbound on/off ramps. The vehicle involved — an electric Jeep Wrangler with Texas plates — slammed into an auxiliary structure that stood on the same property as a historic home and barn.

Driver Fled Scene — Police Launch Massive Search

The Jeep’s driver fled immediately after the crash, leaving behind the heavily damaged vehicle, which was later discovered abandoned on Ridgewood Water property less than a tenth of a mile from the site.

In response, multiple law enforcement agencies launched an intensive manhunt:

  • A K9 unit from the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office

  • An Oradell Police Department drone unit

  • A New Jersey State Police helicopter

  • Ridgewood Police officers with assistance from nearby police departments

Despite these efforts, the suspect remained at large as of Sunday afternoon.

Firefighters Called to Scene

The Ridgewood Fire Department responded to the collapse to ensure no fire hazards remained in the wreckage. Officials confirmed that no injuries were reported.

Community Concern Over Historic Loss

The destroyed outbuilding was tied to a property of significant local history. Residents expressed concern that an irreplaceable piece of Ridgewood’s heritage may now be lost due to reckless driving.

  2. Leaving the scene of an accident is not the same penalty as DUI. Figure it out

  3. If they didn’t catch them yet, no one knows a DUI, you don’t know if they were driving distracted got nervous, is the car stolen or other facts?

  4. Sucks. Just last week , as I drove by that building, I was marveling at the fact that the property has remained almost identical since I went to Glenn School in the late seventies.
