Ridgewood NJ, for the second day in a row, a massive shade tree in Ridgewood’s 100 block of Oak Street shed a large limb, causing significant damage and roadway closures.

The latest incident occurred on Wednesday, July 16, when a heavy tree limb took down overhead electric wires and blocked the entire roadway. Two parked vehicles were trapped beneath energized power lines, creating a dangerous situation.

Emergency Response in Ridgewood

  • Ridgewood Police Department (RPD), Ridgewood Fire Department (RFD), and Ridgewood Emergency Services were quickly dispatched to the scene.

  • A Village of Ridgewood Shade Tree Division crew also responded to assist with clearing debris and assessing the tree’s condition.

  • Fortunately, no injuries were reported in this incident—or the similar one that occurred just one day earlier in the same location.

Ongoing Tree Safety Concerns

The repeated incidents raise concerns about the safety of aging shade trees in residential neighborhoods. Falling limbs can cause:

  • Power outages

  • Property damage

  • Hazards to pedestrians and drivers

The Village may need to evaluate the health of large trees along Oak Street and other areas to prevent further damage.

Roadway and Utility Impact

  • The fallen energized wires temporarily blocked the street, disrupting traffic flow and utility services.

  • Local residents were advised to avoid Oak Street until crews could safely remove debris and repair the damaged power lines.

Stay Safe Around Downed Power Lines

Authorities remind residents:

✅ Always assume downed wires are live
✅ Stay at least 30 feet away from fallen lines
✅ Call 911 immediately to report electrical hazards

  1. Wow, like I’ve been saying for the past few years the shade tree division in town is many years behind and pruning trees. That list must be at least three years old. I know someone’s gonna put their thumbs down and cry, but it’s true. Someone from management will probably give you some bullshit story and say it’s only two months behind get right.

  2. They should be working on Saturday to catch up on trimming. They did it years ago.

    1. I waited 6 years for village tree to be trimmed. They finally came on Mon 7/14. !!

      1. Paramus is the same. I have a large town tree that has been dropping large dead branches up to 20 ft long and the town has done nothing to address the situation. I’ve sent them emails and photos but it falls on deaf ears. For years I complained to them about another town tree on my property . Kept telling them I thought the tree was rotting because of all the fungus growing around the base. After years of fighting with them they finally cut it down in May. Guess what? The tree was rotted in the middle.

  3. And remember this, my fellow friends the ones that put the thumbs down guess who they are. Village, a
management. Oh yes, I have my surveillance on. Eye in the sky is watching them. They have no idea who’s watching them like I said I’m always 10 steps ahead.
