Ridgewood, NJ – A Day of Unity and Support for Special Olympics Athletes . Friday was a powerful day of community, awareness, and athletic spirit in Ridgewood, New Jersey, as members of the Ridgewood Police Department proudly joined students from Ridgewood High School (RHS) in the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run in support of Special Olympics New Jersey (SONJ).
With energy and excitement in the air, officers ran alongside RHS students—including participants from the school’s United Club—to carry the “Flame of Hope” through the streets of Ridgewood. This powerful symbol represents inclusion, determination, and support for athletes with intellectual disabilities.
The Torch Run is part of a statewide tradition where law enforcement agencies across New Jersey take part in a relay-style run to raise funds and awareness for the Special Olympics. This year’s event includes 26 separate legs, culminating in the lighting of the cauldron at the SONJ Summer Games, an inspirational ceremony that celebrates the strength and achievements of Special Olympics athletes.
Ridgewood’s participation highlights the village’s strong sense of community and commitment to supporting inclusive sports and youth engagement. For the Ridgewood Police Department and the RHS students, the run was more than a fitness challenge—it was a meaningful show of solidarity.
As the Flame of Hope made its way through Ridgewood, it carried with it a message of pride, perseverance, and unity—values that continue to define both the Special Olympics and the Ridgewood community.
