Rail commuters who regularly use bicycles to travel to and from the Ridgewood train station are at odds with municipal officials.
The Village Council next month will consider an ordinance allowing authorities to remove and seize bikes parked within public right of ways.
The ordinance, introduced last week, is intended to define the appropriate means and locations for bicycle parking as a “matter of the health, safety, and welfare of the residents,” according to the language contained in the proposal. It is specifically aimed at bikes that are secured to fixed objects but cause impedance to vehicle and foot traffic.
Councilman Tom Riche opposed the adoption of the ordinance on first reading without comment, and Councilwoman Bernadette Walsh was absent.
Why is this such a big deal? The law is moving rather quickly on this.
Just buy more racks!!! Are the council members idiots?
There is money in tickets!! Why would you provide racks for those who chose to save money and the enviorment?? The police can’t find the time to ticket texters or cell phone users, but will be pushed to ticket the bikers because it’s so easy. ” Stop, write a ticket and go”
Come on Ridgewood council, you always make us long time residents shameful how bad our once wonderful VILLAGE once was.
