RIDGEWOOD — Officials have notified the owners of six residential properties, deemed to be abandoned, that they need to make improvements to them soon or the village will take action.

Some of the properties have been on the village’s radar for more than a decade.

One of the homes, on Daniel Court, has become the residence of raccoons and other wildlife, officials said.

Councilwoman Gwenn Hauck read through the list after saying that village officials have twice notified the properties’ owners with “the reasons why they have met the abandoned property criteria.”

The village has requested these owners “work with [officials] on a rehabilitation plan,” Hauck said.

The properties on the village’s abandoned homes list include the modern town house on Daniel Court, whose door is covered with shut-off notices from Ridgewood Water; a shuttered and neglected ranch on Fairway Road; and a dingy but otherwise prim two-story home on North Monroe Street.

The properties do not appear to be occupied. Knocks on doors were not answered, and calls to the last known owners were unreturned.

The Village Council in June adopted the state’s “Abandoned Property and Rehabilitation Act” as part of Ridgewood’s own village code.

According to the state, an “abandoned” property is most often defined as “any property that has not been legally occupied for a period of six months.”

Such homes must also either be in need of rehabilitation or determined by a public officer to be a “public nuisance.”

  1. I’m glad to see that this has come to the attention of our council.
If the owners do not respond, paper them with daily fines, and if appropriate, force a tax sale/auction if the property is in arrears.
I’d also like to see strict enforcement of the maintenance code that includes:
Bushes blocking the view at many corners in town.
Non-political signs on properties (from the dummies who live on the ‘cut through streets’= your lawn signs that are actually on Village property make this place look like shit. “Drive like your kids live here’ signs look like Hopper ave in waldwick’. Go ask the signal bureau to make a ‘slow children’ permanent sign. (your signs are illegal as they are not political)
Lots of sidewalks that need to be replaced.
    Peeling paint on many homes.
The lazy residents that put their recyclables and yard waste cans out 4 days before pickup, and leave the stuff out there 3 days after.
And since the RPD does NOTHING about the cars parked on the street all night , the street sweepers cannot do their job in the morning and there is always crap on the streets blowing around.-hence the reason for this ordinance.
Do something about the barking dogs.( too many of you newbies think its ‘fashionable’ to ‘rescue’ a pitbull or junkyard dog mutt. I hope your homeowner’s insurance company is aware of it because sooner than later you will have a claim.
Every one of the lazy residents that gets a dog and puts up an invisible fence creates a territorial animal that barks and growls. Learn how to take care of an animal that needs social interaction. Its not a plant.

  2. A police State for the Village, I don’t think so. Be careful where you go with this one.

  3. We should think twice before fixing these houses. If we do, people with kids will move in and that will overwhelm the school system. This is 12 kids we are adding to the school system. (Absurdly, more than developers predict for the 100 units of housing being considered downtown) It might destroy the budget.

  4. #1. Sounds like someone has a lot of time on his hands.

You seem bothered by people. Montanna sounds like a place with the ammenities that you seek.

  5. In a normal world, taking these steps would not be necessary. However, we live In a world where there’s a minority of people who seem to range between crazy and holding onto a house that for many years have no ability to maintain.

  6. #1..are you for real????

  7. #1, it would be best if you just take a laxative or add fiber to your diet.

  8. Surprise the village has a townhouse on Daniel Court on their list. The residents in that complex act like this is not part of the village and have previously told neighbors from other streets they are not allowed to walk in this area.

  9. “Councilwoman Gwenn Hauck read through the list” Well maybe they don’t have Daddy help them out.

  10. you know some people don’t have the funds to repair things. just maybe the village can go after a grant for some of these people. they need the help. we are helping every one else in other lands.

  11. I’m with you #1

Ignorant inconsiderate people like you bother me.
Do us a favor and move back to NYC if you don’t like the rules.

Its unnecessary. Just reading your post annoys the shit out of me.
    Please move back to Brooklyn.

If you newbies had any consideration for your neighbors the rules would be unnecessary.

You vote blue, right? You see, us meanies in the red club are already pretty sick of subsidizing the dysfunctional. Ridgewood has a high premium for living here and if you can’t make the cost of home ownership here, then there’s a more appropriate house for you elsewhere.

What is it with you fu$&ing nitwits and your inability to understand math? It’s always a plan that involves spending other peoples money.

  16. #1 has everyone figured out. No stereotype is too broad for him.

What do you do when children step on your lawn?

    The sprinkler system does wonders.

Ever since ‘Reliably Republican Ridgewood’ shifted to the left and began pulling the lever for Democrats, the politeness, consideration, and respect for others has declined.
Its just a sad commentary on the rude, inconsiderate, disrespectful Democrats.
Its like once they plunk down their 5% on a big 30 year mortgage, they ‘deserve’ to have what the long time financially secure residents have.
The only difference is, they want others to pay for it.
Maybe they can see if their buddy Obama can get them a beach house as part of ‘entitlements’.

  19. One grouch posting all day.

  20. Typical clueless residents.
At least 2 homeowners sprinkling away full blast on Morningside.
The rules say ‘no irrigation on Monday’.
Perhaps shut them off at the curb and they might ‘get it’.

Slow day at the drive-up window for you?
Better make sure to supersize my fries this time.
Last time you screwed up the order.

Since Burger King is moving to Canada, does that mean your minimum wage job is disappearing too?

  23. Sad grouch. Thinks that he is insulting people that he does not know and cannot see. Insults are pretty lame, but we’ll let that go for now.

    Why all the anger?

    Haha nice try TROLL.
    You started it a-hole.
Don’t dish it out if you can’t take it.
YOU started it with the personal attacks.
Now stfu and go back to your bedroom in mommy’s basement.

  25. This idealistic lets-help-everyone and all the class warfare that comes with it is a political ploy used by clever politicians all over the world. It works because we have a growing voter bloc that is as dumb as dirt when it comes to economics and simply votes for the party that gives them free shit. We are truly doomed and I see no end to this cancer which will likely conclude with massive civil unrest when it’s no longer possible to take any more from the haves.

  26. Okay folks, can we get back on topic or just not post off-topic?
