Ridgewood NJ, in a major development for safe drinking water in New Jersey, Ridgewood Water recently hosted New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) Commissioner Michael Bange. The meeting focused on critical investments and projects designed to ensure clean, reliable water for the community, including the imminent launch of a new PFAS treatment facility.
Inside the New Prospect PFAS Treatment Facility
The highlight of the program was a tour of the Prospect PFAS Treatment Facility in Glen Rock. This facility is a crucial piece of infrastructure and is scheduled to be operational by December 1.
PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are often called “forever chemicals” because they are persistent in the environment. This new plant will use cutting-edge technology to remove these contaminants from the drinking water supply, ensuring it is safe for consumption.
Here’s a quick look at how these advanced treatment methods work:
- Ion Exchange: This method uses specialized polymer beads that chemically capture and bind the PFAS compounds as water passes through them.
- Activated Carbon Adsorption (GAC): Granular activated carbon is used in large vessels. The PFAS chemicals are physically adsorbed (or trapped) onto the surface of the carbon material.
- Reverse Osmosis: This highly effective process uses high pressure to push water through fine membranes, which separate and remove the PFAS.
Beyond PFAS: Investing in Water Infrastructure
The discussion between Ridgewood Water and Commissioner Bange covered a wide array of vital infrastructure projects, all aimed at future-proofing the water system:
- Lead Service Line Replacements: A commitment to removing old lead service lines, a major public health priority across the state.
- Distribution System Improvements: Upgrades to the underground network of pipes to ensure reliability and prevent water loss.
- GIS Operations and Water Conservation: Utilizing geographic information systems (GIS) for better management and planning, alongside strategies to promote water conservation.
These ongoing efforts show a strong dedication to modernizing the water system and protecting public health across the Ridgewood Water service area, hopefully making the water more plentiful and drinkable.
