RIDGEWOOD, NJ — Ridgewood Water is urging residents across its four-town service area to reduce water usage immediately, as recent spikes in early-morning lawn irrigation have nearly triggered Stage 3 drought restrictions.

According to officials, Tuesdays and Saturdays have seen dramatic increases in water demand, which Ridgewood Water attributes primarily to automatic lawn watering systems. These spikes put a strain on the municipal water supply and threaten to push the area into a Drought Emergency Condition.

Stage 3 Water Restrictions: What They Mean

If implemented, Stage 3 restrictions will impose mandatory limits on outdoor water usage across Ridgewood and surrounding areas. Here’s what the rules would require:

  • Odd-numbered addresses may only water lawns using a hand-held hose on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

  • Even-numbered addresses are limited to Wednesdays and Sundays.

  • No irrigation of any kind will be allowed on Mondays, Thursdays, or Fridays.

Note: These restrictions apply to all properties within Ridgewood Water’s service area, which includes Ridgewood, Glen Rock, Midland Park, and Wyckoff.

Why It Matters

Ridgewood Water emphasizes that responsible water use is essential to maintaining service reliability during the hot summer months.

“These early-morning surges in water demand place enormous stress on the system,” said a Ridgewood Water spokesperson. “We’re asking all customers to adhere to the two-day watering schedule and avoid unnecessary irrigation to help us avoid entering Stage 3 restrictions.”

  2. If residents ignore stage 2 rules without penalty, how will the town enforce stage 3

  3. It’s amazing how many people in town have fake private well signs on their property. Now the village exactly knows who has a private well or not. They know who they are stop playing that game.

  4. I passed by one of our neighbors on Monroe twice between the hours of 6:30 and 8:15am and the sprinklers were still going full force on my return pass! If you’re going to water, at least redirect your sprinklers so you’re not watering your driveway and sidewalk for two hours.

  5. I simply water 2x on the days that I am assigned – and I let those things run for a long time. Once early in the am and once after dark. Lush green grass in a sea of burnt out lawns.

  6. Overuse of Automatic Smart Controllers that don’t comply with the the rules to Only have them set on 2 allowable odd/even days between 3a.m.- 7.a.m. during Permanent Stage 2 Water Restrictions!!
June 9,2024 VOR employees found 72 VIOLATIONS in one week in all four towns served.
they get 2 warnings, after 2nd warning, get ticket. They could have their service shut off at curb. Good.
People Still ignore . C’om on now.

    1. And will continue to ignore! ignore! ignore! pay enough already in taxes. can’t feed the friggin’ birds?? can’t water the lawn?? this is the garden state!

      1. People will find their own solutions.

Until they ban the use of KIDNEYS

  7. Also Ridgewood Water……”people aren’t using enough water. Revenue is down. We have to raise rates!”

  9. Haha’your nailed you bull shiter”

  10. Turf fields flood and a water shortage all on the front page.
    Seems odd.

  11. A Tier-1 residential community of AFFLUENCE should not deal with water restrictions yearly. It’s time to sell the water company, blend our supply with reservoir water, and fix this – finally. Oh, and deposit a HUGE check to pay off debt, or eliminate tax increases.

    1. Tier -1 community of AFFLUENCE would be Saddle River, Upper Saddle, Franklin Lakes where the High End Mansions are, and fire equipment pumpers don’t have the resources and can’t put out a Mansion fire., they burn to the ground. Stop bitching, Go move there!
Meantime, conserve water usage, do it for ALL your neighbors. Be a Nice Neighbor!! Turn OFF your Damn Auto Smart Controllers .

      1. Tier-1 residential community members of AFFLUENCE don’t need to be good neighbors. They’re AFFLUENT. Although AFFLUVIA is more apt in some cases.

  12. Older people who keep subsidizing the school system should stand out there for hours in 100-degree temperatures watering by hand early and late to prevent the loss of thousands of dollars’ worth of plantings? Not happening.

  13. ” It’s time to sell the water company, blend our supply with reservoir water”

WHAT?? And share the water with what the common folks use? And that reservoir, fish pi$$ in it!!!

You want the “village” to lose its exclusivity???????????????????????

  14. It’s been raining all summer & this pathetic “village” has no water.
