Saddle River NJ, the borough of Saddle River  is suspending its controversial deer culling program after five years, it was the only such program in Bergen County. The Borough council approved a wildlife management plan in 2018 aimed at reducing its burgeoning deer population through “culling” during the deer hunting season from September to February. The ordinance also allowed the killing of coyotes that hunters come across during their deer hunts.

Saddle River opted for bow hunting, a contract with United Bow Hunters of New Jersey to cull the deer during the state’s deer hunting season. Hunting was restricted to properties whose owners gave permission and were given advance warning. A “forbidden” list was created of residents who did not want hunters on their property.

According  borough records, the number of deer culled went down over the five years of the program:

  • 2018-2019: 138 deer killed;
  • 2019-2020: 117 deer killed;
  • 2020-2021: 84 deer killed;
  • 2021-2022: 52 deer killed;
  • 2022-2023: 50 deer killed.

  1. Guess people want to go back to feeding them in their back yards….the idea of managing the deer population should not be controversial…in Hawthorne and North Haledon they graze by the dozens in people’s lawns. My dad can’t control them and they eat anything he plants.

    1. its not the culling, its bow hunting in a residential neighborhood that was controversial

      1. Agreed. We should come up with a more safe and efficient way of culling them down. The deer are dangerously overpopulated and a serious road hazard.

  2. Not controversial.

    Controversial is letting men call themselves women and vice versa…
