SADDLE RIVER, NJ — A long-awaited addition to Rindlaub Park is finally ready for its public debut. The $2 million covered bridge and nature trail expansion will be formally unveiled at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on October 11, marking a significant milestone in Saddle River’s 20-year master plan.
Connecting the Park: A Vision Realized
The new Walsh Family Bridge spans 80 feet and connects the 15-acre eastern portion of Rindlaub Park with an 11-acre western section that had previously been inaccessible except through a nearby private parking lot. The bridge not only improves park accessibility but also opens up new recreational opportunities for residents and visitors.
A Project Years in the Making
The bridge was first estimated at $700,000, but the final cost rose to $1.45 million, prompting the resignation of Council President Rosario Ruffino in 2023 in protest of the escalating budget. However, the borough received $300,000 in matching grants and a generous $750,000 donation from the Francis Walsh family, for whom the bridge is named.
Built in Texas and shipped in segments for reassembly, the bridge earned the 2024 Engineering Project of the Year Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers for its eco-conscious design and engineering excellence.
Environmental Enhancements on the Horizon
According to Mayor Albert Kurpis, the bridge remains temporarily closed as work continues on developing the surrounding nature pathways. This includes a trail boardwalk, pollinator gardens, an apiary, birdhouses, and educational kiosks, all budgeted at an additional $583,928. The area also features Tricker Pond, a scenic 3-acre body of water home to Saddle River’s beloved swans.
Kurpis emphasized the importance of waiting until the area is safe for pedestrians:
“We haven’t finished the paths yet, and we don’t want people in there until they are cleared and signage is installed. There are snakes and things in there we want to help pedestrians avoid.”
Existing Park Amenities
The eastern portion of Rindlaub Park already includes:
-
Biking and walking trails
-
Two baseball fields
-
A multi-purpose field
-
Tennis courts
-
Bandshell stage
-
Playground and snack stand
-
Restroom facilities and parking
Access to this section is available via East Saddle River Road, just south of Borough Hall.
Celebration and Community Involvement
Following the October 11 ribbon-cutting, the borough will host a candlelit dinner on the bridge to benefit the Saddle River Arts Council, featuring live classical music. Those interested in attending should contact Borough Hall for ticket information.

Looks great …did Rosie O’Donnell contribute any money ?
No over-development…no field of schemes…no high-density housing or assisted living facilities…
Elections matter.
LOL. Incidentally, this is the price it will cost Ridgewood just to remediate the mess it made at Schedler.
We are literally a Jersey Joke town.
Whatever happened to Rurik’s “Skybridge over Route 17” to connect Schedler with Old Paramus Church?
Any updates on the fundraising efforts?
