Details of the Collision

The crash occurred just before 11:30 a.m. under the Garden State Parkway in the northbound lanes, according to Paramus Police Chief Robert Guidetti. Preliminary investigations revealed that the school bus, owned by Becton Regional High School in East Rutherford, changed lanes, colliding with the tractor-trailer. The impact caused a minor fuel leak from the truck.

Injuries and Emergency Response

  • Injured Parties: Three individuals on the school bus sustained minor injuries—the bus driver and two students.
  • Medical Transport: They were transported to Hackensack University Medical Center for treatment.
  • Bus Occupants: The bus was carrying seven students (five from Becton Regional High School and two from Wood-Ridge High School) along with the driver.

Response Teams

The incident prompted a coordinated response:

  • Emergency Services: Paramus Police Department, Paramus EMS, and The Valley Hospital BLS & ALS units provided immediate medical care.
  • Firefighters: Paramus Fire Department Company 2 managed the fuel leak and assisted in clearing the crash site.

Impact on Traffic

The collision led to the closure of the right shoulder and right travel lane on Route 17 northbound, causing significant delays. Emergency crews worked efficiently to manage the fuel spill and restore normal traffic flow, with lanes reopening after the vehicles were towed from the scene.
