World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler Played Through Painful Contagious Illness at BMW Championship

Ridgewood NJ, World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler delivered a gutsy performance over the weekend, finishing tied for 12th at the BMW Championship in St. Louis. However, the Ridgewood-born star revealed after his final round that simply holding his clubs was a painful ordeal throughout the tournament.
Following his 7-under-par (273) finish on Sunday, August 23, Scheffler revealed he had been battling hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) for most of the week.
Fighting Through Blisters and Pain
Speaking after the tournament, the 30-year-old shared that he first came down with the illness early in the week. The condition left him with painful blisters across his hands, feet, and throat.
“If I was smarter maybe I would have pulled out,” Scheffler remarked regarding his decision to play through the discomfort. “That’s part of my stubbornness probably… I’ve never been one to ever pull out of a tournament, especially in the middle of it.”
According to health guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), hand, foot, and mouth disease is a viral infection most common in children under 5, though adults can contract it as well. It typically causes fever, painful mouth sores, and skin rashes or blisters on the hands and feet.
