A Super Bowl Message From Bergen County Executive Kathleen Donovan

The Super Bowl is literally just around the corner and I wanted to take this time to express how exciting it is to have this major event right in our own back yard! The Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks with their fans from around the world will be coming to this region to the biggest event in sports. With this influx of visitors, I strongly encourage residents to keep informed on traffic delays and to plan accordingly.

Traffic and Public Transportation: The Getting to the Game website (www.nj.gov/superbowl) is a collaborative effort involving the New Jersey State Police, the Department of Transportation, the Port Authority of NY/NJ, New Jersey Transit and other state public safety and transportation agencies. The website will serve as a location for state government and public transportation agencies to post important information for state residents and out-of- town visitors as New Jersey gears up for the Super Bowl.

The website will give users access to an interactive map showing real-time traffic delays in the area of MetLife Stadium. The Port Authority has provided links to information on bridges, tunnels, airports, and PATH subway services. New Jersey Transit has provided links to bus and train schedules, rail maps, and fare information. Real-time weather information for the East Rutherford area is posted. The website also allows local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to post public safety information.

Teterboro: Speaking of traffic, it will not only be cars. Be aware that you will hear an increase in airplane traffic at Teterboro Airport. There is a no-fly zone established on February 2 that will shut down air traffic at Teterboro from about 4:00 p.m. until one hour after the game ends. Then there will be a rush of traffic from about midnight until 5:00 a.m. on February 3. With that exception of post-game operations, the voluntary restriction on operations between 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. will remain in effect and mandatory departure noise limits will be in effect. Aircraft with an operating weight in excess of 100,000 are not permitted to land or take-off. The increased air traffic at Teterboro will also increase car traffic in the area.

Low Temperatures Cause Frozen Plumbing Pipes

As the weather out there is pretty tough we have seen repeatedly in the last few days freezing pipe problems that have caused damage and some real headache and expense for homeowners. Below are a few tips to help you prevent a frozen pipe in your home or business and if you have any questions of need any help call QUEST Plumbing & Heating at: 201-399-2160 and we would be happy to stop by and help.

1. Look around the house for any hoses and faucets that might be dripping or leaking.

2. Water in exposed outdoor hoses or pipes will freeze and make your hose or pipe burst. If you have an interior shut off valve for an outdoor faucet or hose shut it off and empty the water by opening the external valve.

3. If your main shut off valve is located in an unfinished basement, you need to verify that the temperature in the area is not going to drop. If the main supply pipe will freeze, as a first step water will not come from

the taps or faucets in the house and later on the pipe will burst which will cause a lot of damage.

4. Regarding a main shut off valve, main shut off valves are rarely used, we have encountered situations from time to time where the home owner needs to shut off the valve and in case of emergency the valve was never used or moved for a few years and the result was that the valve was broken or started leaking. When the weather is a little more stable you should carefully test the main shut off valve just in case there is a leak and you have to shut off the main water valve immediately. The way to do that is to slowly turn off the water and turn it back on twice. If you feel that the valve is too hard to move, don’t touch it. Call us and let us handle it because you might create a big problem if the valve is stuck or rusty.

5. There are units that act as a local heater that are controlled by a thermostat that keep pipe temperatures stable in case the temperature drops outside. If you have water pipes in your basement, attic, and crawlspaces or if you ever experienced a problem with a certain pipe that is located in an external wall without proper insulation, you might need to have a professional help you protect the pipe. Those devices are available for a fairly low price and we help clients to solve freezing pipe problems many times by installing them.

American Kennel Club to Recognize Ridgewood with a Dog-Friendly Community Award

Bergen County Town to be First Recipient of AKC Dog-Friendly Community Award

New York — The American Kennel Club announced its decision to recognize the Village of Ridgewood, NJ with its first-ever “AKC Dog-Friendly Community Award.”

The award presentation will take place on Saturday, February 8 at 1pm in the Saddle River County Park in Ridgewood. The Park’s “dog run” will serve as the location for the event. *

New Jersey Federation of Dog Clubs (NJFDC) President Jeffrey Ball will lead the event along with representatives from the American Kennel Club. They will be joined by Ridgewood Mayor Paul Aronsohn, Councilwoman Gwenn Hauck and other members of the Ridgewood Village Council and Government. Bergen County Executive Kathleen Donovan also plans to attend.

The event will be open to the public and will be followed by a reception 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the Ridgewood Village Hall Community Center, which is at 131 North Maple Street.

People are encouraged to bring their dogs to the event at the park.

Background
The American Kennel Club (AKC) recently established a new national award, the “AKC Dog-Friendly Community Award,” to honor dog-friendly communities for actions taken to promote responsible dog ownership in that community. These actions could include establishing a responsible dog ownership committee, hosting events promoting responsible dog ownership, holding community educational programs or any other actions that advance the well-being of dogs and the residents of the town.

In December, the AKC announced its decision to make Ridgewood the first recipient of the award.

Peyton Manning has the opportunity to pull a John Elway and ride off into the sunset as a Denver Bronco after winning his second ring, not that he wants to retire. His career will hinge upon an offseason exam on his surgically-repaired neck, according to ESPN ’s Chris Mortensen. Obviously, the most important implication of the exam will be Manning’s health. But whether his career continues will have an effect on how much tax New Jersey can collect from him for his appearance in the Super Bowl XLVIII.

Should the Broncos beat the Seahawks, Manning—and the rest of his teammates—will earn $92,000. The loser’s share in the Super Bowl is $46,000. So why does Manning’s future beyond February 2 matter to New Jersey? It would seem logical that the Garden State would apply its tax rates on the $92,000 or $46,000 Manning earns for his week in East Rutherford. Unfortunately, we are dealing with tax laws, not logic.

Ridgewood NJ, As founder and Chairman of the Congressional Constitution Caucus, I am committed to preserving and protecting your rights as outlined by the Constitution of the United States. Like you, I believe it is critical to keep Americans safe, particularly without jeopardizing the protection of their civil liberties. But, recently, news came out that Americans’ civil liberties might be in jeopardy.

Over the summer, it was revealed that the Obama Administration’s National Security Agency (NSA) was engaged in a bulk collection of data, including phone call and text message information, for all Americans.

Though the NSA is apparently not collecting the contents of these calls and text messages, this bulk collection is troubling. This data can readily be used to establish important facts about citizens, including the patterns of their behavior, their preferences, and who they call and why. This reveals, beyond the mere collection of the data, information about which citizens typically have a reasonable expectation of privacy. I have serious concerns that various NSA programs that collect information about American citizens do—in principle and in effect—violate both the spirit and letter of the constitutional protections of our civil liberties.

A majority of Americans. 51 percent, also believe Obama is not a strong leader.

n the eve of President Obama’s State of the Union Address, a new poll from Washington Post-ABC News shows that fully 63 percent of Americans have either little no confidence Obama will make the right decisions. The public is evenly split on whether Obama is honest and trustworthy, with 49 percent of Americans answering in the affirmative, and 48 percent answering negatively.

A bare majority of Americans, 52 percent, feel Obama does not understand the problems of people like them – a shocking downward turn for Obama on an important likeability issue on which he dominated in 2012. A majority of Americans. 51 percent, also believe Obama is not a strong leader. His disapproval rating stands currently at 50 percent, with 41 percent disapproving strongly – only 23 percent support him strongly. 50 percent of Americans have an unfavorable impression of the president.

If the U.S. Supreme Court applies an appropriate constitutional analysis the NSA’s program of wholesale collection of data will be dismantled

I just read the Constitutional Law section of the Privacy and Civil Liberty Oversight Board’s January 23, 2014 Report on the NSA’s Telephone Records Program. I also skimmed the other sections, including one that analyzes the policy aspects of the program. As an attorney, I found the Constitutional law section to be well-written, incisive, and balanced. As a citizen and patriot, I appreciate the fact that the authors of this report appear to have a firm grip on the fact that the ultimate authority in this country resides in the citizens themselves (We the People), regardless of what anyone vocationally associated with the Federal Government, or philosophically committed to promoting statism, may believe to the contrary.

I am now convinced that the NSA’s program of wholesale collection and long-term storage of U.S. citizens’ telephone data is a vastly expensive and expansive sitting duck that will be dismantled and cast onto the ash heap of history as soon as the U.S. Supreme Court applies an appropriate constitutional analysis to it, if not sooner (e.g., pursuant to a lawful order of a lower court). It is absolutely unconscionable that such a program was allowed to proceed as far as it did, and our federal government should be ashamed of itself.

Regardless of what anyone believes the definition of the terms ‘traitor’ and ‘treason’ to be, Edward Snowden did all U.S. citizens a solid favor by so clearly bringing the scope and details of this program to the attention of the U.S. public at large. Why? Because without the enormous amount of concentrated critical attention on the NSA that Snowden triggered, this behemoth of a government program and system could well have closed the loop on all of our freedoms and important constitutional rights in a very short period of time (e.g., before the end of the Obama Administration), permanently altering the relationship between ordinary U.S. citizens and the federal government, and leaving us powerless to force the federal government to reverse course or enact necessary reforms. So if time was truly of the essence, and Snowden acted in a timely fashion, are we the law-abiding duty-bound to condemn him?

Highly-placed members of the George W. Bush administration involved in national security, and Bush-era government lawyers who should have been (and likely were) aware of the clear unconstitutionality of the program as it was designed and run prior to Obama’s inauguration in January 2009, should be roughly ignored if they persist in supporting the NSA’s bulk telephone data collection program. They are compromised from a political and professional standpoint and will never admit that what they did was wrong. Going forward, they will need to be dragged kicking and screaming into a corrected view of reality in which our constitutional rights and liberties are abruptly restored, and the federal government is forced to take its medicine.

New Jersey added a minuscule 10,100 jobs in 2013 after losing more than 36,000 jobs in December — the biggest single-month job loss in 23 years — painting a bleak picture of the state economy and raising questions about its health and direction.

The jarring December figures released Thursday, which economists cautioned may be a statistical blip, translate to a .26 percent job gain for the year, and represent a sharp reversal from the slow-but-steady job increases of recent months that suggested a slight strengthening of the economy after a weak summer.

The December drop of 36,300 jobs — 33,200 private and 3,100 public — was so broad-based that economists said it was difficult to pinpoint a particular reason. They offered several possible explanations, including unusually cold weather, which could explain the loss of 6,500 construction jobs, and could have caused the temporary loss of work for day and freelance workers.

Economists noted, however, that the figures for the entire year will be revised in March, a process that has in the past resulted in some significant changes in monthly totals. (Morley/The Record)

The office of Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) is denying a report that he’s under FBI investigation for allegedly helping a pair of fugitive bankers from Ecuador.

NBC 4 New York reported Thursday that the bureau is probing whether the chairman of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations committee pressured the Obama administration to keep brothers William and Roberto Isaias from being expelled back home, where they’re wanted for embezzlement. A spokeswoman for Menendez called the allegations “outlandish.”

“Our office works each year with literally hundreds of individuals and families from across the country who are seeking help with the immigration process,” Menendez’s communications director Tricia Enright said in an email. “We review each and every request we receive, and if we feel any inquiry is appropriate, we make it.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — For all the consternation over whether Mother Nature may or may not visit in northern New Jersey for next weekend’s Super Bowl, another unpredictable force could determine whether the event turns into a transportation debacle: the football fan.

The $64,000 question, beyond whether Feb. 2 will bring another storm the likes of the one that dumped nearly a foot of snow Tuesday, will be whether the estimated few hundred thousand visitors to the area heed organizers’ advice and leave their cars at home or at their hotels.

If fans do decide to take mass transit, they will find plenty of options waiting. If they don’t, they will find out what New York metro area residents already know, that the slightest disruption to the traffic system, be it construction, an accident or the influx of more vehicles, can tip an already delicate balance into chaos. Feds reportedly looking into Robert Menendez for allegedly helping fugitive bankers

TRENTON — U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez is under federal criminal investigation for allegedly helping a pair of Ecuadorian fugitives who are wanted in their home country on charges of embezzling money from their failed bank, according to a report by NBC New York.

The television station, citing unnamed sources, reported tonight that the FBI is looking into why the New Jersey Democrat contacted a high-ranking official at the Department of Homeland Security in April 2012 to ask him to give “full consideration” and “expedite” its review of the case of William and Roberto Isaias, who are seeking permanent residence in the U.S. The report said Menendez also made calls to the Department of State about the brothers.

WASHINGTON — A government review panel warned on Thursday that the National Security Agency’s daily collection of Americans’ phone records is illegal and recommended that President Obama abandon the program and destroy the hundreds of millions of phone records it has already collected.

The recommendations by the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board go further than Obama is willing to accept and increase pressure on Congress to make changes.

The 234-page report included dissents from two of the board’s five members — both former Bush administration national security lawyers who recommended that the government keep collecting the phone records. The board described key parts of its report to Obama this month before he announced his plans last week to change the government’s surveillance activities.

Nasa says Mars mystery rock that ‘appeared’ from nowhere is ‘like nothing we’ve seen before’

A mysterious rock which appeared in front of the Opportunity rover is “like nothing we’ve ever seen before”, according to Mars exploration scientists at Nasa.

Experts said they were “completely confused” by both the origins and makeup of the object, which is currently being investigated by Opportunity’s various measuring instruments.

Astronomers noticed the new rock had “appeared” without any explanation on an outcrop which had been empty just days earlier. The rover has been stuck photographing the same region of Mars for more than a month due to bad weather, with scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in California monitoring the images it sends.

Nasa issued a Mars status report entitled “encountering a surprise”, and lead Mars Exploration rover scientist Steve Squyres told a JPL event it seems the planet literally “keeps throwing new things at us”.
