Controversial utility poles to be installed

RIDGEWOOD — Crews from Public Service Electric and Gas will return to Ridgewood next weekend, despite months of objections from village officials and residents.

Work will resume to install new utility poles on Hope Street and Spring Avenue on Dec. 14 and Dec. 15. The work is scheduled to commence at 8 a.m. and continue through 5 p.m. on each day.

More poles will then be installed Dec. 28 and Dec. 29 in front of Ridgewood High School, as part of PSE&G’s efforts to connect substations in Fair Lawn and Paramus.

The work will resume less than a month after the state’s Board of Public Utilities denied a request from the village, seeking the continuation of a moratorium on the pole installations.

The board’s decision cleared the way for the project to continue; work has been on hold since the summer, when residential opposition first began.

Residents of Hope Street and Spring Avenue in July complained to village officials, saying the poles — which, at 65 feet tall, soar above the neighborhood’s treetops — would diminish property values and pose serious health and safety considerations.

Representatives from PSE&G met with the village on Wednesday morning, to offer up a timeline on when the project would continue.

On Monday, poles will be installed on Maple Avenue.

Study: Holiday Season Brings Out The Worst In Drivers

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — If you have witnessed a case of aggressive driving lately, you are in the majority of drivers surveyed across the country. A new study shows the holiday season is among the worst times for erratic behavior on the highways.

Pat Warren has more on the results of the survey.

State Farm Insurance asked the questions and drivers delivered their frustrations.

An online survey finds 64% of drivers experienced aggressive driving six times or more in the past three months. Forty-four percent own up to aggressive behavior themselves.

President Obama Falsely Attacks Generation Opportunity at WH Youth Summit

Apparently it’s “bizarre” to tell young people they have options

Washington, DC – (12/4/13) – Evan Feinberg, President of Generation Opportunity, issued the following statement in response to President Obama’s misleading attacks today:

“Today, the President called our efforts to educate young people on alternatives to Obamacare ‘bizarre.’ What’s bizarre is that the President of the United States would use his ‘youth summit’ (our invitation must have been lost in the mail) to mislead young people about their healthcare options while refusing a dialogue with anybody that has concerns about Obamacare.

“Obamacare is a bad deal for our generation, but health insurance is not. Unfortunately, Obamacare is not health insurance but generational theft, placing huge cost burdens on us to subsidize older, wealthier, and sicker generations.

“To steal a phrase, let me be clear. We have always advocated that young people make a responsible decision. And that’s to opt out of Obamacare and purchase private insurance outside of the government-run health care exchanges.”

The White House Youth Summit comes on the heels of new polling indicating that young Americans have soured on Obamacare and the President.

If a recall election were held today 52% of young Americans 18-24 would vote to recall President Obama.

Rogers: WH Won’t Even Give Classified Briefings on HealthCare.Gov Security Problems

The Obama administration has avoided informing lawmakers of HealthCare.gov’s security problems and this is just another incidence of  the White House’s incompetence we’ve seen since the health-care law’s rollout, according to House Intelligence chair Mike Rogers (R., Mich.).

“They could not even provide someone — CMS and HHS, the two folks responsible for the HealthCare.gov website — in a classified setting to come up and talk about the breaches that they know have happened,” Rogers said on Fox News on Monday. “That’s just unconscionable.”

Obama spends $600 million on rail projects that benefit private companies

WASHINGTON — The railroad industry brags in its national publicity campaign that it spends billions of dollars improving its infrastructure “so taxpayers don’t have to.”

But the ads don’t tell everything. The nation’s freight rail network has been the quiet recipient of more than $600 million in federal investment during the Obama administration.

According to Federal Railroad Administration numbers, at least half that amount has gone to projects that benefit the nation’s four largest railroads, the same companies at the heart of the industry’s ubiquitous “Freight Rail Works” campaign.

That doesn’t even include tens of millions more that states have contributed for additional investment in ports and high-speed passenger trains that’s boosted the nation’s freight railroads.

Donor sought for former Ridgewood athlete

Anthony Daniels, a Fordham University student and former Ridgewood High School (RHS) hockey player, took up boxing a few years ago and goes to the gym every day to lift weights.

He also cracks jokes about having “chemo brain” and laughs about how terrible hospital food is.

“I haven’t really sat in my bed and cried at all,” said Anthony, a 2009 RHS graduate who has a rare, stubborn case of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma that is not responding well to treatments. “I also don’t think that I could die, to be honest with you. I don’t think of that as a possibility.”

Anthony is the definition of a fighter, but now he needs an angel. Residents are encouraged to attend a local donor registration drive on Saturday, Dec. 21 to learn if they can be his “angel donor” of white blood cells – among less than 1 percent of the population that could be his perfect match.

Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, according to the National Cancer Institute, is a cancer of the immune system that affected about 9,000 new Americans this year, with about a 90 to 95 percent cure rate among children.

At the drive, taking place in Village Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., healthy people ages 18 to 44 will get the inside of their cheek swabbed. Anyone who is a match for Anthony or others in need will be contacted later to undergo a process similar to blood donation.

As Expected State sides with PSE&G over Ridgewood pole objections

Disappointed residents are “weighing their options” now that PSE&G has received state approval to continue installing new taller poles with higher voltage lines in Ridgewood.

Residents had voiced objections to the new poles’ 65-foot height, route and related safety concerns, but the state Board of Public Utilities (BPU) decided in a public meeting on Nov. 22 – nearly three months after it granted Ridgewood a hearing on the issue -that PSE&G could continue its work, part of a regional transmission upgrade project.

“While the board has reviewed the foregoing considerations and local zoning provisions set forth by the village at length, the board hereby finds that they are outweighed by the greater public interest,” the BPU stated in its decision.

The group Individuals Concerned About Residential Electricity (ICARE), which formed when PSE&G began the installation this past summer on Hope Street and Spring Avenue, issued a statement on Tuesday.

North Jersey community groups ready to test HealthCare.gov

As federal officials touted HealthCare.gov’s latest fixes this weekend, two North Jersey community groups were crossing their fingers for an improvement over the paper applications they’ve been using for the last month.

That could happen today. Based on assurances from the White House, locals are hopeful that they’ll be able to ditch the paper for the website.

“This is really a wait and see,” said Mary Garner, chief executive of the Paterson Community Center, the only organization in Passaic County to receive funds to help residents apply for insurance. “What has to be done is not in our hands to be done. We can’t make an online system. If the whole federal government with all of its money and all of its power and all the pieces of the mosaic that have to be put together to make it work, if they can’t do it, a little tiny community health center doesn’t have the wherewithal.”

The website — HealthCare.gov — was supposed to let consumers shop easily for health insurance, required by the Affordable Care Act when it was launched Oct. 1. The continued technical problems of President Obama’s signature domestic initiative have been a political disaster for him and fellow Democrats.

Nov. 30 was not originally intended to be a key date for the online enrollment system, but it took on outsized political and public importance when administration officials announced five weeks ago that the “vast majority of users” would be able to sign up for insurance through the site by that day. Government and outside technical employees have worked around the clock for weeks on the fixes so the administration could keep its promise to have the site working smoothly for most people by then.

Shale gas and eased sanctions on Iran will test Opec’s ability to curb output and buoy prices

At a private dinner early in November a group of executives from one of the world’s largest commodity traders was asked to predict the price of oil in a year’s time. Without exception the forecasts, scribbled on place cards without consultation, were for Brent crude to fall well below the $100 a barrel level it has traded above for most of the past three years.

Those predictions reflect a growing consensus in the oil market. From US shale to an easing of sanctions on Iran, the coming years are expected to provide a huge boost to global output, inverting the structure of the oil market in which supplies have long been rationed by a handful of producers.

Is President Obama a lame duck already?

Second terms have historically been tough ones for presidents. From Ronald Reagan’s Iran Contra scandal to Bill Clinton’s Lewinsky affair to Hurricane Katrina during George W. Bush’s second term, U.S. leaders have so often found their second four years going off the rails that it’s known colloquially as the “second-term curse.”

President Obama has been no stranger to this trend. Despite winning reelection, he has had to compromise on many of his priorities or have seen them rejected outright by Congress: letting the Bush-era tax cuts expire; gun control measures; investments in the economy, and quite possibly, immigration reform.

While he doesn’t quite qualify as a lame-duck president – a term reserved for the 10-week period after a successor has been elected – Mr. Obama has seen his ability to set and carry out an agenda significantly curtailed just a year into his second term. Political scientists and scholars tend to point to two reasons for this: an obstinate, Republican-controlled House of Representatives, and the botched roll out of the Affordable Care Act, the president’s signature legislative achievement.
