U.S. disability rolls swell in a rough economy

MILLINOCKET, MAINE — The huge mills along the Penobscot River roared virtually nonstop for more than a century, turning the dense Maine forests into paper and lifting the thousands of men who did the hot and often backbreaking work into the middle class.

But the mills have struggled in recent years, shedding thousands of jobs. Now this area, whose well-paying jobs provided an economic foothold for generations of blue-collar workers, has become a place where an unusually large share of the unemployed are seeking economic shelter on federal disability rolls.

Between 2000 and 2012, the number of people in Penobscot County receiving Social Security disability benefits skyrocketed, rising from 4,475 to 7,955 — or nearly one in 12 of the county’s adults between the ages of 18 and 64, according to Social Security statistics.

The fast expansion of disability here is part of a national trend that has seen the number of former workers receiving benefits soar from just over 5 million to 8.8 million between 2000 and 2012. An additional 2.1 million dependent children and spouses also receive benefits.

The crush of new recipients is putting unsustainable financial pressure on the program. Federal officials project that the program will exhaust its trust fund by 2016 — 20 years before the trust fund that supports Social Security’s old-age benefits is projected to run dry.

As Budget Fight Looms, Obama Sees Defiance in His Own Party

WASHINGTON — For four years, President Obama counted on fellow Democrats to rally to his side in a series of epic battles with Republicans over the direction of the country. But now, deep in his fifth year in office, Mr. Obama finds himself frustrated by members of his own party weary of his leadership and increasingly willing to defy him.

In recent weeks, disgruntled Democrats, particularly liberals, have bolted from the White House on issues like National Security Agency surveillance policies, a planned military strike on Syria and the potential choice of Lawrence H. Summers to lead the Federal Reserve. In private, they often sound exasperated describing Mr. Obama’s operation; in public, they are sometimes only a little more restrained.

Media Buries Psychiatric Drug Connection to Navy Shooter

Networks don’t want to risk losing $2.4 billion in ad revenue from pharmaceutical giants

Despite every indication that Navy Yard gunman Aaron Alexis was on SSRI drugs that have been linked to dozens of previous mass shootings, the mainstream media has once again avoided all discussion of the issue, preferring instead to blame the tragedy on a non-existent AR-15 that the gunman didn’t even use.

We now know that Alexis “had been treated since August by the Veterans Administration for his mental problems.”

As Mike Adams points out, “This is proof that Aaron Alexis was on psychiatric drugs, because that’s the only treatment currently being offered by the Veterans Administration for mental problems. Alexis’ family members also confirmed to the press that he was being “treated” for his mental health problems. Across the medical industry, “treatment” is the code word for psychiatric drugging.”

Alexis also suffered from PTSD, blackouts and anger issues – all of which are treated with SSRI drugs. The most common form of treatment for PTSD is Paroxetine, which is listed as the number 3 top violence-causing drug by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP).

The Navy Yard shooter was clearly on some form of psychiatric drug, but the media has shown no interest in discovering its identity.

N.J. pushing plan to require better college grades from incoming teachers

Becoming a teacher would usually require a “B” average in college under a proposal being pushed by the New Jersey Department of Education.

Education Commissioner Chris Cerf raised this idea in June as part of a package of proposals to boost teacher quality, and his office sent districts a memo Tuesday that it’s seeking public comment until Nov. 15. The education board would vote whether to approve it after that.

Applicants now need a 2.5 grade-point average to get into a traditional teacher preparation program in New Jersey, and a 2.75 for a provisional license after completing training.

The proposal boosts the minimum to a 3.0 in both stages, but allows for exceptions when a candidate has a particularly strong mastery of content. Many universities already require a GPA of 3.0 to enter teacher preparation programs.

The proposal also requires that the pool of candidates in a college-based teacher-prep program have a 3.0 average in high school. Stating that minimum score for the pool of candidates – rather than each student – allows for some flexibility.

A multibillion dollar plan to protect part of New Jersey’s power grid against major storms drew a mix of cheers and jeers Monday afternoon, as trade unions, business groups, senior citizens and others turned out at a public hearing to urge its approval or its defeat.

“It seems like a simple choice to me,” said Noel Christmas, a utility workers union leader, imploring state regulators to support the Public Service Electric and Gas Co.’s $3.9 billion Energy Strong proposal. “We can continue react to what Mother Nature dishes out. Or we can act now to better prepare.”

“Rubbish! Rubbish!” countered Ken Lindhorst, 72, of Summit, who was among a group of retirees protesting the proposal as too much of a burden on utility customers. “I’m outraged. Don’t shift the responsibility to ratepayers!”

That was the tenor of the 2½-hour hearing at Essex County College in Newark, as a crowd of about 200 split over whether the state Board of Public Utilities should endorse the first phase of PSE&G’s plan for upgrades. The improvements, which range from moving power stations to strengthening power lines, are aimed at averting the kinds of outages that left customers without electricity for up to two weeks after Superstorm Sandy.

PSE&G says the project would raise the average residential electric bill by 4.5 percent and the gas bill by 5.4 percent over five years, but the company has stressed that the increases would be largely offset with the expiration of special surcharges currently on bills. PSE&G, the state’s largest power provider, serves 2.2 million customers throughout northern and central New Jersey, including 600,000 in Bergen and Passaic countie

September is National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

RIDGEWOOD, NJ – September 12 – Most urologists say yes; the United States Preventive Task Force (USPTF), a governmental agency, says no.

PSA is a protein produced by cells of the prostate gland. The PSA – prostate-specific antigen – test measures the level of PSA in a man’s blood. An elevated PSA level can be indicative of prostate cancer.

The PSA test has recently come under scrutiny by the USPTF. The agency feels that screening for prostate cancer does not save lives and puts men at risk for complications of treatment when there is a slow-growing prostate cancer.

Arguments on behalf of the effectiveness of PSA testing include:

A European study on PSA screening initially showed a 20 percent benefit in terms of mortality, which increased to 30 percent benefit several years later.

A Scandinavian study (Goteborg study) that showed an almost 50 percent benefit in mortality.

The U.S. mortality from prostate cancer has dropped approximately 40 percent since the onset of PSA testing.

Metastatic disease at presentation has dropped 75 percent since PSA testing began.
Prostate cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer deaths in men.

“PSA testing does not necessarily lead to definitive treatment,” says Howard Frey, M.D., Medical Director, The Valley Hospital Urologic Oncology Center. Active surveillance is used much more commonly to address slower-growing cancers that perhaps don’t need active treatment.

“Rational healthcare decisions are more easily made when you are armed with information,” Dr. Frey says. “Ultimately, whether you should or should not have a PSA test is something you will have to decide after considering your overall risk and discussing it with your doctor.”
