July 4th in Ridgewood is a very special day that our entire area looks forward to all year. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Honoring our Declaration of Independence.”

Our committee is thrilled to have a descendent of a signer of the Declaration of Independence as our Grand Marshal.  Thornton Lockwood, “Thorny”, is a descendant of Declaration signer Josiah Bartlett, and a first cousin, eight times removed, of Benjamin Franklin.

While the Parade is free, Fireworks Tickets are required for entrance to Veteran’s Field. Fireworks Ticket sales are one of the Celebration’s largest sources of income. Tickets are available for advance purchase at stores for $8. Tickets will be on sale at the gates for $15 for adults and $10 for children ages 6-12. Buy your tickets in advance for big savings! Children 5 and under are admitted for free.

Harris Poll: Only a third of U.S. adults qualify as very happy

ROCHESTER, N.Y., June 1 (UPI) –Only a third of U.S. adults say they are very happy — minorities show particularly pronounced declines in the past two years, a U.S. survey indicates.

A Harris Poll of 2,345 U.S. adults surveyed online April 10-15 by Harris Interactive found certain groups, such as minorities, recent graduates and the disabled, trended downward in the last couple of years.

“Our happiness index offers insight into what’s on the minds of Americans today and is a reflection of the state of affairs in our country,” Regina Corso, senior vice president of the Harris Poll, said in a statement. “While the attitudes on the economy may be improving, we’re seeing that this is not translating into an improvement in overall happiness.”

Since last measured two years ago, the Happiness Index was especially low among the Hispanic-American population. It is important to note that a causal link cannot be established, it might not be a coincidence that this drop coincides with a political landscape that has seen frequent, sometimes contentious, discussion of immigration policy in recent months, Corso said.

Americans earning under $50,000 per year were less likely to qualify as very happy than in 2011 — down from 33 percent to 29 percent among those earning less than $35,000, and from 35 percent to 32 percent among those earning between $35,000-$49,999.

Hunch About Bloomberg Brought Rivals Together

Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase are usually bitter rivals, competing for lucrative banking and trading business. But one day in April, the Wall Street titans found common ground: frustration with the Bloomberg news and financial data empire.

Goldman’s public relations chief, Jake Siewert, a former Treasury official, called his counterpart at JPMorgan Chase, Joe Evangelisti, with a simple question: “Do you have any issues with Bloomberg?”

Before he could finish his sentence, Mr. Evangelisti began rattling off his grievances, say people briefed on the call. At the top of the list was a Bloomberg News article in 2011 that likened the strife in an Italian town after a bad deal with JPMorgan to the fallout from the Nazis’ occupation in World War II. He also mentioned another episode when a Bloomberg reporter surreptitiously obtained an access code to listen to a private conference call for senior executives.

Register NOW for RIDGEWOOD SUMMER DAY CAMP

Fresh air, sunshine, new friends, fun, games, and special memories all add up to Ridgewood Summer Day Camp.

Camp will open for the 2013 summer season Tuesday, July 2nd, and run for six weeks through Friday, August 9th. Children entering grades 1 through 6 will enjoy arts and crafts, organized games, swimming, special events and optional trips. Camp will be held at The Stable, Graydon Pool, Maple Park, Veteran’s Field, the Community Center at Village Hall and Leuning Park, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Children are to bring a bag lunch and beverage. Bus transportation from Village locations is available to all.

The day camp registration fee for Ridgewood children is $525.00, non-resident children $700.00, which includes two camp T-shirts and optional bus transportation.

All campers must possess a 2013 Graydon Pool membership badge (visit www.ridgewoodnj.net/graydon for details).

Off-site trips are optional with limited space; prices vary and registration will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

GRAYDON POOL MEMBERSHIPS NOW ON SALE

Resident fees are $110 per adult, $100 per child (ages 2 through 15) and $20 for seniors (62 and older). Non-resident adults will be charged $175 and children, ages 2 through 15, will be charged $155 for the13 week season.

Badges are now on sale and can be purchased from the comfort of home on Community Pass at www.ridgewoodnj.net/communitypass (Visa and MasterCard are accepted). In person registration assistance will be available Saturdays, May 11 and May 18, 10:00 am to 12 noon, at the Graydon Pool Badge Office, 259 North Maple Avenue. Badges may be purchased daily throughout the operating season, June 1st through Septemer 2nd.

Benefits of later school openings touted in Ridgewood

Speaking recently about Ridgewood High School’s (RHS) new professional development program, students and administrators had mostly good things to say.

Since its introduction last May, the program has offered teachers several extra hours throughout the year to meet and students more time for sleep or work.

And now, after a presentation for Board of Education (BOE) members last week, the BOE is equally on board with the program, which is designed to provide staff members with an opportunity for collaboration between departments and individual staff members.

Are You Concerned You May Have a Genetic Risk for Cancer?

Ridgewood NJ,  Angelina Jolie’s decision to have a preventive double mastectomy after learning that she carried a mutation (alteration) in a gene that put her at an 87 percent risk of developing breast cancer highlighted a complex dilemma for women with family histories of breast or ovarian cancer.  At issue: a mutation in either the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene increases the risk of developing breast cancer by as much as 87 percent, and the risk for ovarian cancer by up to 44 percent.

And it’s not just women who are affected. Men with the mutated BRCA2 gene are at increased risk for male breast cancer, and both men and women with the BRCA2 mutation have an increased risk for pancreatic cancer.

So, how do you know if you are a candidate for genetic testing for cancer?
There is no simple list of criteria indicating which individuals should undergo testing.  However, those with a strong family history of breast or ovarian cancer, or a personal history of breast, ovarian or pancreatic cancer should consider being evaluated for genetic testing for BRCA mutations.  The following additional factors indicate that the probability of detecting a mutation is high enough to warrant consideration of testing:

• A family history  of  close blood  relatives with breast cancer, ovarian cancer and pancreatic cancer, particularly breast cancer diagnosed before age 50
• A family history of  male breast cancer
• A BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation has been discovered in your family
• Your family is of Ashkenazi Jewish descent and there is a family history of breast, ovarian or pancreatic cancer.

The cost for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation testing usually ranges from several hundred to several thousand dollars. Insurance policies vary as to whether or not the cost of testing is covered, but most cover the screening for appropriate high-risk patients.  If you are considering BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation testing, you should inquire about your insurance company’s policies regarding genetic tests.

If you do test positive for the BRCA mutation, you have options.  These include enhanced cancer surveillance like having Breast MRI alternating with mammograms and breast ultrasound every 6 months and transvaginal pelvic ultrasound, medications to reduce your risk of developing breast cancer, and preventive surgeries, such as prophylactic double mastectomies and removal of the ovaries and fallopian tubes (bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy) after child bearing age.

In our experience, most medical insurance plans will cover the cost of enhanced surveillance and prophylactic and reconstructive surgery in high-risk patients that are carriers of the BRCA mutation.

Obama officials are ‘criminalising journalism’, says Republican senator

The Obama administration has been  accused of criminalising the press, as US lawmakers called for an independent investigator to look into the way the Justice Department conducts cases involving reporters.

President Barack Obama is facing widespread criticism for the aggressive way in which his government investigates leaks, after it emerged that officials had secretly seized phone records from the Associated Press and monitored personal emails of the Fox News reporter James Rosen.

Mr Obama last week directed his Attorney General, Eric Holder, to review the Justice Department’s procedures. Mr Holder is due to report back in July – but his position as the head of the department at the centre of the controversy has led lawmakers to question whether he is the right person to lead the review.

Washington launches four different investigations into IRS scandal

Capitol Hill aides spent their Memorial Day weekend scanning hundreds of pages of documents related to the IRS scandal in order to prepare their bosses for what will inevitably be a frantic month of June involving multiple simultaneous investigations into government wrongdoing. By the time lawmakers return to session next week, at least four different investigations will be underway.

As The Daily Caller has reported, at least five different IRS offices including Cincinnati, Ohio; Baltimore, Maryland; Chicago, Illinois and El Monte and Laguna Niguel, California improperly targeted conservative nonprofit groups for extra scrutiny between 2010 and 2012.

The IRS’ shenanigans, chronicled in a damning report by Treasury Inspector General J. Russell George, started when a “team of [IRS] specialists” came together in April 2010 to process the tax-exempt nonprofit status of conservative groups that might be “potential political operations” (page 13 of the IG report). The IRS added “additional specialists” to this effort in December 2011.

The Sharyl “PIT BULL” Attkisson approach

Sharyl Attkisson has problems.

The Obama administration won’t answer the CBS News correspondent’s questions because her investigations — into Benghazi, Fast and Furious, Solyndra — often reflect negatively on it. Some colleagues at CBS News, where she has worked for two decades and earned multiple Emmy awards, dismiss her work because they perceive a political agenda. And now, she says, someone may have hacked into her computers.

Attkisson’s one piece of solace may come from finally gaining some like-minded colleagues in the media. For years, Attkisson has been one of the few mainstream reporters pursuing critical stories about the Obama administration. Today, as “scandal season” takes hold in Washington, she has seen her longstanding skepticism of the White House and the Justice Department become the conventional attitude among a formerly deferential Beltway press corps.
