2012 Celebration Theme Chosen

The Ridgewood Fourth of July Celebration Committee is proud to announce their theme for the 2012 celebration.  The theme will be “Born in New Jersey ”.  The Ridgewood Fourth of July Celebration Committee will sponsor its annual celebration on Wednesday, July 4, 2012.

This year’s theme is “Born in New Jersey,” which includes:
1.  Famous people who were born here (including but not limited to Bruce Springsteen and Frank Sinatra)
2.  Things invented here (for example, Edison’s light bulb)
3.  Events that occurred here that gave new direction to our country (Washington Crossing the Delaware, Morristown encampment)
 Groups are encouraged to use this theme in the design of floats and other entries.

The purpose of the Ridgewood Fourth of July Celebration is to celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the USA and its history and to honor American Patriots of all times.  For 2012, we would like to focus on the history of New Jersey.  We will celebrate the wonderful people, inventions and events that all came from our state.

The Ridgewood Fourth of July Celebration began in 1910 when the local papers, the civic section of the Woman’s Club and the Ridgewood Fire Department joined forces to create a “safe and sane” holiday with an emphasis on Patriotism.   It has grown into one of the largest celebrations in the New York City area.

For many years the Readers of 201 Magazine have named our parade and fireworks as best in their Best of Bergen poll.  Additional information and answers to many of your questions can be found on the Ridgewood Fourth of July Celebration Committee’s website at www.ridgewoodjuly4th.org.

The Ridgewood Fourth of July Celebration is organized by the Ridgewood Fourth of July Celebration, Inc., an all-volunteer community group. All aspects of this annual Celebration including fireworks, bands, evening performers, insurance, and police and fire personnel are funded by voluntary contributions from businesses and individuals.

NEWARK – The staging place for the undercover operation was a four bedroom, three bathroom Cape Cod-style dwelling that, like many homes in its Lyndhurst neighborhood, suffered extensive structural and mold damage as a result of floodwaters caused by Tropical Storm Irene. The home served as the base for a multi-agency, four-day undercover operation to expose allegedly unregistered home improvement contractors seeking to capitalize on the August 2011 natural disaster that left many homeowners in desperate need of home repair help.

As part of the operation, Division of Consumer Affairs investigators, posing as homeowners, responded to home repair advertisements shortly after the floodwaters receded. The investigators invited a total of 16 contractors to visit the undercover house, examine the damage, and provide repair estimates.

The Christie administration is launching an effort to create a “model curriculum” for low-performing schools — its most aggressive step yet to dictate not only what is taught but also how and when it is taught.

As part of a new accountability system proposed to the federal government, the state’s Department of Education is beginning a year-long process that will see the first specific content outlines and school-based assessments in place for language arts and math by next fall, officials said.

Most of that initial effort will reflect the national Common Core State Standards already developed in those subject areas and adopted in more than 40 states, including New Jersey. But the state will do the same for other areas such as the arts, physical education, and world languages.  (Mooney, NJ Spotlight)

Is it just a coincidence that the people that President Obama nominates to fill high-level governmental posts tend to favor government-directed health care rationing?  Last year, Obama nominated Donald Berwick to head Medicare and Medicaid. Now he’s nominated Henry J. Aaron to head the Social Security Advisory Board.

Berwick, to whom Obama issued a dubious recess appointment to circumvent the usual Senate confirmation, has become notorious for statements like, “The decision is not whether or not we will ration care — the decision is whether we will ration with our eyes open” — and, in progressive-speak, “The social budget is limited.”

Officials in Gov. Chris Christie‘s administration are close to recommending New Jersey join 23 other states in passing a law authorizing public-private partnerships, a senior official said today.

The partnerships would include transportation projects and other areas, according to Wayne Hasenbalg, Christie’s deputy chief of staff for policy and planning.

Hasenbalg also told the infrastructure advocacy group New Jersey Alliance for Action in a brief speech that the administration is preparing significant changes in support of the state growth plan announced by Christie.  (Kitchenman, NJBIZ)

The Christie administration is moving to repeal an anti-sprawl measure that sought to discourage growth in undeveloped areas by imposing the cost of extending utility services on the developer or customers served by the extension.

In a draft rule unveiled by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU), the agency would now allow those costs to be potentially spread over the entire ratepayer base. Under the current rule, developers can spread the costs among all ratepayers only when building in designated growth areas with an existing infrastructure, such as towns and suburbs.  (Johnson, NJ Spotlight)

September 11 Attacks – Our Generation’s Day of Infamy


(Ridgewood, NJ): On Friday, U.S. Senate candidate from New Jersey Ian Linker issued the following statementas the tenth anniversary of the September 11th attacks approaches.

Riding into New York this morning I couldn’t help but think, as I have countless times over the past ten years, about the September 11 attacks – our generation’s day of infamy. 

More than 3,000 woke up that beautiful Tuesday morning but did not come home that evening to their loved ones. They got up just like they did every day. They went about their lives. They got ready for work. They went to their office, their precinct, their firehouse, or the airport. They served their communities.

And then everything changed. Their beautiful lives were extinguished in a flash by jealous animals. The animals who committed those unspeakable acts of terror hated America because we are free. They hated us because we are self reliant. They hated us because we achieve. They hated us because we don’t tell our people where or how or to whom or even whether to pray. And there are plenty more of them today lurking under rocks throughout the world and here at home. They took much from us nearly ten years ago. But we learned a lot that day. We learned that our lives, our neighbors, our families, our loved ones, our friends, and our freedom must never be taken for granted. So, as Americans have so many times in our history, we rose up from the ash and the rubble, and overcame much heartache, much anger, and much hardship. 

We have been at war against extremism ever since. Ours is a fight for freedom. We must be vigilant in our fight and must never relent. Freedom isn’t easy. It must always be protected. It must always be guarded. It must never be assumed. If we take our freedom for granted, we may wake up one morning and it could be gone. Never forget those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001 – I know I won’t.
