Hackensack NJ, Sears has been in a death spiral for years and that demise has been accelerated by COVID19. Sears has recently initiated “Store Closing Sales” in 20 of its remaining locations and that number continues to grow by the week. and day. Liquidation sales have begun with the 88 year old Hackensack store in line for shut down.
The iconic 1932 art deco structure is situated just north of the community’s central commercial district. Its three story Indiana limestone exterior and 105-foot tower defines the former commercial strength of the retailer.
Situated at Main and Anderson Streets, Sears Hackensack celebrated its grand opening on October 27, 1932. The store, along with locations in Union City and Brooklyn, marked the retailer’s first investment in the New York market. Over the years, the Hackensack and Brooklyn stores have bucked the company’s closing trends and have remained open. They almost stand as monuments to the retailer’s commercial legacy and former glory.
