Priced Out of the “Beautiful Game”? Why 2026 World Cup Tickets Are Sparking Global Outrage

East Rutherford NJ, Soccer is often called the “people’s sport,” but for fans hoping to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup™ in the United States, the price of admission is feeling more like a luxury exclusive.

As the tournament approaches, a wave of frustration is sweeping across North America and beyond. With “get-in” prices for early group-stage matches in cities like Los Angeles and Atlanta already soaring past $500 on secondary markets, many loyal supporters are asking: Who is this World Cup actually for?

“Corporatization on Steroids”: The Death of the Populist Game?

For decades, global football has marketed itself on accessibility. However, experts say the 2026 tournament marks a tipping point into what Andrés Martinez of Arizona State University calls “the corporatization of World Cups on steroids.”

While the U.S. has always been an expensive market for live sports—with NFL and MLB prices jumping 300% since the 1990s—the 2026 World Cup is hitting new heights. The primary drivers of the outrage include:

  • Lack of Transparency: Fans report confusion over how tickets were allocated before hitting resale sites.

  • The “American Premium”: Critics argue FIFA is leveraging the profitable U.S. consumer market to “milk” revenue from prime seats.

  • Obstructed Views for Thousands: Early buyers reported shelling out thousands of dollars only to be assigned seats with limited visibility.

A Cultural Divide: Blue-Collar Roots vs. High-End Revenue

The sticker shock is particularly painful for international fans. In much of Europe and South America, soccer remains a blue-collar tradition where attending a match is a weekly ritual, not a once-in-a-lifetime financial burden.

“In most of the world, soccer is a very blue-collar sport,” says Alan Fyall of UCF’s Rosen College of Hospitality Management. “There’s a cultural divide here… it’s definitely led to some consternation.”

With exchange rates and the high cost of U.S. travel and lodging, international supporters are finding it increasingly impossible to follow their national teams to the States.

FIFA’s Defense: Demand Outstrips Supply

In response to the backlash, FIFA points to the sheer scale of interest. This is the first World Cup in North America in over 30 years, and the demand is unprecedented.

FIFA stated that a large block of tickets was allocated to host nations’ member associations to ensure “loyal fans” have access. However, the organization has not disclosed exactly how many tickets were withheld from the general public or how many were funneled directly into high-priced “hospitality” packages.

The Economic Reality: Only the Wealthy in the Stands?

As inflation and the cost of living remain top concerns for many, economists warn that the 2026 World Cup may become an event reserved only for the affluent.

“The pricing model strategies make it more likely that the wealthiest fans will be the ones in attendance,” says Lindsay Owens of the Groundwork Collaborative. “Many passionate, loyal, enthusiastic fans will be priced out.”

Quick Stats: Attendance & Costs

Category 1994 World Cup (U.S.) 2026 World Cup (U.S. Projected)
Total Attendance 3.6 Million (Record) Expected to Shatter Record
Average Ticket Price Approx. $50–$100 $500+ (Secondary Market Minimum)
National TV Rights Emerging Market Multi-Billion Dollar Industry

  1. Feels like a lot of build up and hype that is going to fall flat.
MetLife has a capacity limit, as do all stadiums, so how much “bigger and record shattering ” can these events be than what has already occurred in the past?
