Hillsdale Nj, the mayor and council have scheduled a special meeting to address the resignation of Councilwoman Abby Lundy, following her recent arrest in Connecticut in connection with an embezzlement scheme involving a nonprofit children’s organization.
Lundy, a Republican who has served on the borough council since her election in 2016, turned herself in last Thursday to New Canaan police, facing charges of first-degree larceny and second- and third-degree forgery. The charges stem from her alleged role in embezzling at least $85,000 from First Candle Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to eradicating sudden infant death syndrome and supporting grieving families.
In light of Lundy’s arrest, Mayor Michael Sheinfield has ordered an independent audit of the borough’s finances, which began on Monday. The audit is a precautionary measure to ensure the integrity of the borough’s financial management.
Lundy submitted her resignation via email on Friday, effective immediately. The council will meet on Thursday at 10 a.m. to discuss the process for filling the vacancy left by her departure. Lundy’s term was set to expire on December 31, and she was running for reelection in the upcoming general election.
Her name has already been removed from the borough’s website, and the Bergen County Clerk’s office has updated the general election ballot to replace Lundy with Robert Colletti Jr. Colletti will now join current council President John Escobar as the Republican candidates facing off against Democrats Christopher Camp and Melissa Mazza Chiong in November.
Lundy’s arrest and subsequent resignation have prompted a thorough examination of her financial activities at First Candle Inc. Investigators found that she allegedly transferred nearly $86,000 to herself from the nonprofit, leading to the revocation of the organization’s nonprofit status by the IRS for failing to withhold payroll taxes since 2020.
Mayor Sheinfield emphasized the council’s commitment to transparency and accountability, stating, “No member of the council can encumber or release any borough funds. We respect Abby’s right to due process and privacy, but we must ensure the integrity of our borough’s finances.”
The results of the third-party audit will be released to the public as soon as they are available.
