Trenton NJ, A recent tweet on Governor Murphy’s official Twitter account promoted in-person voter registration available inside hospital emergency rooms. An attempt to get them to register voters before they die?
“In emergency rooms full of sick patients, the Governor somehow thinks it’s a good idea to urge people to take the time to register to vote, yet he is preventing New Jersey citizens from exercising their constitutional right to vote in a booth in a municipal building,” said Pennacchio. “E.R. waiting rooms are breeding grounds for pathogens and the spread of infection. The insanity of this is shocking. You can’t make this stuff up.”
Murphy’s tweet showed a temporary registration station installed in the E.R. of University Hospital in Newark.
“Even following meticulous social distancing and healthy guidelines, it takes mere moments to vote. Registering to vote is considerably more time-intensive, and applying science and common sense the risk of being infected with COVID or anything else is significantly greater in emergency room environments,” Pennacchio continued. “Murphy’s defiant resistance to in-person voting is a power play and political gamesmanship. It flies in the face of common sense and has nothing to do with public health or science.”
Not insane, calculated. ER visitors will be more likely to vote Democratic than a sample of the general public.
