PARAMUS, NJ – A routine Wednesday morning near one of the region’s busiest medical centers turned into a scene of chaos and injury. A 63-year-old man was hospitalized in serious condition after being struck by a vehicle and carried onto its hood in a dramatic collision directly outside The Valley Hospital.

In a surprising twist, Paramus police have since issued a summons to the pedestrian involved in the accident, citing a violation of New Jersey traffic laws.

The Incident: Collision at Sandor Court

At approximately 11:48 a.m. on Wednesday, December 17, Paramus police units were dispatched to the intersection of East Ridgewood Avenue and Sandor Court.

According to Paramus Police Chief Robert M. Guidetti, the driver—a 68-year-old male—was traveling eastbound on East Ridgewood Avenue. The driver reported that the pedestrian suddenly ran into the roadway, attempting to cross from north to south.

The impact was significant:

  • Hood and Windshield Impact: The 63-year-old pedestrian was struck with enough force to be carried onto the hood of the vehicle before slamming into the windshield.

  • No Crosswalk: Chief Guidetti noted that the incident occurred at a section of the roadway where there is no marked crosswalk.

Medical Treatment and Legal Consequences

Emergency responders quickly arrived on the scene and transported the injured man to Hackensack University Medical Center for treatment. While the extent of his injuries has not been fully disclosed, the impact with the windshield suggests a high-energy collision.

However, the investigation concluded that the pedestrian was at fault for the accident. Police have officially issued him a summons for improper crossing of a roadway. Under New Jersey law, pedestrians are required to use marked crosswalks when available and must yield the right-of-way to vehicles when crossing at locations other than a crosswalk.

Safety Warning for East Ridgewood Avenue

The area surrounding The Valley Hospital is a high-traffic zone for both motorists and pedestrians. Local authorities are using this incident as a critical reminder:

“Pedestrians must utilize marked crosswalks and obey traffic signals, especially on busy corridors like East Ridgewood Avenue,” police officials stated. “Running into traffic mid-block creates a life-threatening situation for both the walker and the driver.”
