National Safety Council: 26 Percent Tied To Use, But Only 5 Percent To TextingMarch 27, 2014 11:34 AM

STAMFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) — Texting and driving is dangerous but a new survey finds talking on a cellphone while behind the wheel may be even worse.

As WCBS 880′s Paul Murnane reported from Stamford, the National Safety Council’s annual reportfound 26 percent of all crashes are tied to phone use, but noted just 5 percent involved texting.

Safety advocates are lobbying now for a total ban on driver phone use, pointing to studies that headsets do not reduce drive distraction.

Some motorists said they support the idea.

“Everybody’s on a telephone. If people do cut you off, you look and they’re talking on the telephone. I think they are a problem.” a driver told Murnane. “Hands-free or not.”

  1. How long before we see a police car in the same position?

  2. I completely agree that all phone usage should be against the law when driving. Stop the insanity. People are being killed by the distracted drivers. Please, make it all illegal now.

  3. Easy solution.
    Ban All Cars.

    Win-Win.
Cars are evil global warming villans anyway.

  4. Talking on the phone is OFTEN an emotional experience in one way or another or at the very least, an attention getter. The driver of a car has enough to be aware of without that. Talking on the phone by a driver should absolutely be banned, with huge penalties, including blue tooth and all that stuff.

  5. I agree with #4 completely.

  6. Drivers are distracted by a whole multitude of things, including:

    1. Conversation with a car passenger.
    2. Listening to radio/music.
    3. Passing advertising signs.
    4. Sneezing.
    5. GPS Directions.
    6. Looking out for potholes.

  7. Listening to the radio is OFTEN an emotional experience in one way or another or at the very least, an attention getter. The driver of a car has enough to be aware of without that. Listening to the radio by a driver should absolutely be banned, with huge penalties, including blue tooth and all that stuff

…and that doesn’t even take into account the danger of dancing while driving.
