Ridgewood NJ, the Taliban-led Afghan government has officially enacted stringent new laws that further suppress the rights of women, banning their voices and bare faces in public. This move is rooted in a 2022 decree by the country’s spiritual leader and signals a significant escalation in the enforcement of the Taliban’s notorious “vice and virtue” morality laws.

Since regaining power in Kabul in August 2021, following the poorly organized and chaotic withdrawal of U.S. forces , the Taliban has steadily rolled back the freedoms that women and girls had gained over the past two decades. The withdrawal is remembered by many Americans for images of crowds of desperate Afghans at the Kabul airport. Some chased a U.S. Air Force plane, some even hanging on as it took off — and tragically fell to their deaths. A suicide bombing killed 13 U.S. service members and the Taliban got control over massive amounts of military equipment.

The latest restrictions include banning women from speaking or singing in public, prohibiting music in public spaces, and barring men from shaving their beards. These measures are seen as a stark reversal of the Taliban’s earlier promises to maintain some of the increased freedoms that had been established.

The international community, especially those who supported Afghanistan’s progress over the last two decades, has expressed deep concern over these developments. Former U.S. National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster criticized the Biden administration for its handling of the 2021 withdrawal, which led to the Taliban’s swift return to power. McMaster argued that the administration’s decision has not only emboldened the Taliban but also had broader geopolitical repercussions, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“The stain of August 2021 is still with us,” McMaster said, referring to the chaotic withdrawal that resulted in the deaths of 13 U.S. service members and over 100 Afghans in a suicide bombing at Hamid Karzai International Airport. He added that the resurgence of jihadist terrorist organizations and the dire situation for women in Afghanistan are direct consequences of the withdrawal.

Three years after the Taliban’s return, Afghanistan’s women are facing some of the harshest restrictions yet, while the world watches the tragic erosion of their rights.

      1. Read it and weep! At the same time, however, it underscores the continuity of government that exists regardless of who occupies the Hu-whyte House. So Trump signed the withdrawal order. But what was poor little Biden to do when he inherited the peace agreement with the Taliban? I dunno, I guess he’s just stuck with it! Womp. Womp. Riiiight, because the country that invaded and Afghanistan looking for a rich Saudi Arabian kid and occupied it for nearly twenty years couldn’t have just said to the Taliban “Sorry, that last guy you were talking to, he’s gone now. We do things a little differently around here. No deal. What are you going to do about it?”

Isn’t that why you vote the other dudes out, so things change?

        1. It gets better. 200+ former Bush, McCain and Romney aides pen letter supporting Harris/Walz:
