Teaneck NJ, a Bergen County high school was thrust into a state of emergency this Friday as law enforcement swarmed the campus to investigate an “item of concern.”

The incident at Teaneck High School sparked a two-hour lockdown, drawing a massive response from local police and specialized K-9 units. Here is everything we know about the security breach and the current status of the investigation.

The Discovery: A Shell Casing in the Girls’ Restroom

The alarm was raised during the school day on Friday, Feb. 27, when a single shell casing was discovered in a third-floor girls’ bathroom. School officials acted immediately, placing the building under a “HOLD” status—a localized lockdown used to keep students and staff in place while a threat is assessed.

Police and K-9 Units Swarm the Campus

By 1:00 p.m., Teaneck Police, school safety officers, and a Bergen County K-9 unit were on-site conducting a floor-by-floor sweep of the building.

Deputy Police Chief Seth Kriegel confirmed that the search was exhaustive. According to a joint letter from Schools Superintendent Andre Spencer and Principal Piero LoGiudice:

  • The building was secured immediately.

  • A full sweep yielded no weapons.

  • No active threat was found within the school perimeter.

Students and Staff Remain Safe

While the lockdown lasted approximately two hours, officials emphasized that students and staff were supervised and remained safe throughout the entire process. By 2:30 p.m., police announced that normal school operations had resumed, though a law enforcement presence remained on-site as a precaution.

A Disturbing Trend in North Jersey Schools?

This incident follows a string of similar security scares across North Jersey. Earlier this month, high schools in Hoboken and Westfield were also forced into lockdowns due to anonymous threats. While those incidents were ultimately deemed non-credible, the discovery of physical ammunition components in Teaneck has heightened local concerns.

Ongoing Investigation: How You Can Help

At this time, authorities have not identified a suspect or determined how the shell casing entered the building. The investigation remains active, and police are looking for leads.
