Teaneck NJ, a planned panel discussion on the future of Syria at the Darul Islah Islamic center in Teaneck, New Jersey, has been abruptly canceled after the featured speaker,  British Muslim journalist Sami Hamdi, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in California.

Hamdi’s detention on Sunday at the San Francisco International Airport, followed by the Trump Administration’s intention to deport him.

Hamdi a controversial British political commentator who celebrated the horrific Oct. 7 terror attack by Hamas was detained in the US just after starting a speaking tour.

Sami Hamdi, who told a mosque to “celebrate the victory” days after the 2023 attack left 1,200 Israelis dead, was taken into custody at San Francisco International Airport on Sunday while heading on a speaking tour for the Council for American-Islamic Relations [CAIR], the organization said.

The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that his “visa was revoked and he is in ICE custody pending removal.”

Visa Revoked: Detention Over Unspecified ‘Terrorism’ Ties

Sami Hamdi was scheduled to speak at the Teaneck event, titled “Syria: Past, Present and Future,” on October 29th. The event was sponsored by the Syrian Forum, a nonprofit dedicated to aid and development in Syria.

The detention was swiftly confirmed by Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin in an X post on October 26th. McLaughlin stated that Hamdi’s visa was revoked and he is now “in ICE custody pending removal.”

McLaughlin offered a stern defense of the action: “Under President Trump, those who support terrorism and undermine American national security will not be allowed to work or visit this country. It’s commonsense.”

Activists Claim Responsibility for Targeting Speaker

McLaughlin’s confirmation was issued in response to posts by high-profile anti-Muslim activists.

  • Amy Mekelburg, an anti-Muslim activist, publicly alleged that Hamdi was tied to the Muslim Brotherhood.
  • Laura Loomer, another figure known for promoting anti-Muslim hate, claimed credit, saying she had personally reported Hamdi to federal authorities.

  1. One doesn’t need to like it, but almost any/every Muslim / Islamic group, organization, and individual needs to be watched very carefully. Too many of these people are violent and do weird things like truck bomb the World Trade Center, and occasionally fly planes into them too. They do not assimilate well, either, meaning they will not change. Look at Europe.
