Teaneck NJ, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced additional charges against 37-year-old DIEGO A. ZHININ of Teaneck, NJ. The additional charges are the result of an ongoing investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, under the direction of Chief Matthew Finck; the Hackensack Police Department, under the direction of Chief Michael Antista; the Maywood Police Department, under the direction of Chief Terence Kenny; and the Teaneck Police Department, under the direction of Chief Andrew McGurr.
As previously reported, on Friday, August 1, 2025, the New Jersey Division of Child Protection and Permanency contacted the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit regarding the alleged sexual abuse of a juvenile under the age of sixteen. An investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Teaneck Police Department revealed that DIEGO A. ZHININ sexually assaulted a juvenile under the age of sixteen in Teaneck between November 2020 until July 2025. ZHININ was subsequently arrested on charges of sexual assault, aggravated criminal sexual contact, and endangering the welfare of a child. ZHININ made his first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, NJ and was ordered released pending further court action.
As a result of the continuing investigation, detectives determined that DIEGO A. ZHININ sexually assaulted the victim on multiple occasions over the course of approximately eight years, between November 2016 and July 2025, in Hackensack, Maywood, and Teaneck. Accordingly, on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, additional charges were filed against ZHININ.
On Friday, August 22, 2025, DIEGO A. ZHININ surrendered to law enforcement at the Maywood Police Department. ZHININ was arrested and additionally charged with four counts of first-degree aggravated sexual assault, N.J.S.A 2C:14-2A(1); and one count of first-degree criminal attempt to commit sexual assault, N.J.S.A 2C:5-1A. He remains held in the Bergen County Jail pending a detention hearing in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, NJ.
Prosecutor Mark Musella states that all charges in the entirety of this case are merely accusations, and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Prosecutor Musella thanks the Hackensack Police Department, Maywood Police Department, and Teaneck Police Department for their assistance in this investigation.
