Bergenfield NJ, a shocking incident unfolded on Sunday, October 5th, in Bergenfield, New Jersey, when a local rabbi was assaulted outside his home. Authorities have confirmed that a suspect is now in custody.

The victim has been identified as Rabbi Avraham Wein, the assistant rabbi at Congregation Keter Torah in nearby Teaneck. The swift response from a community member and law enforcement ensured the attacker was quickly apprehended.

Details of the Assault

The incident occurred around 2 p.m. on Sussex Road. According to Bergenfield Police Chief Mustafa Rabboh, the attacker, identified as Jeffrey Zicchinella, 40, of Ridgefield Park, was driving by when he stopped his vehicle and assaulted the rabbi.

Crucially, the situation was defused by a brave nearby resident who immediately came to the aid of Rabbi Wein.

Both the rabbi and the intervening resident sustained minor injuries in the encounter.

Police Stress “Random, Isolated Incident”

While the community reels from the news, Chief Rabboh moved quickly to reassure residents.

“At this time, we believe this to be a random, isolated incident,” Chief Rabboh posted on the Bergenfield Police Department’s Facebook page. Initial police findings also indicate that the suspect is not a resident of Bergenfield.

In the wake of the attack, police presence has been increased throughout the area, and additional security measures are being implemented around local synagogues as a precaution.

Suspect Charged

The suspect, Jeffrey Zicchinella, has been formally charged with two counts of simple assault. He has been remanded to the Bergen County jail.

The incident, while alarming, highlights the strength of the Bergenfield community and the willingness of neighbors to protect one another. The thoughts of the entire community are with Rabbi Wein and the Good Samaritan who intervened.
