Teaneck NJ, a Teaneck woman is facing serious charges after authorities say she fraudulently obtained approximately $36,000 while volunteering at a Bergen County nonprofit, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.

🔍 Investigation Into Nonprofit Theft in Bergen County

The investigation began in February when the Teaneck Police Department notified the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Financial Crimes Unit about possible theft involving a local nonprofit organization. The name of the nonprofit has not been disclosed.

Following a detailed investigation, authorities identified Karen A. McEvoy, 57, of Teaneck, as the individual allegedly behind the scheme.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, McEvoy:

  • Wrote unauthorized checks from the nonprofit’s bank account

  • Deposited those checks into her personal bank account

  • Assumed the identity of another member of the organization

  • Forged signatures on the checks to validate the fraudulent activity

In total, McEvoy allegedly stole approximately $36,000 from the nonprofit.

⚖️ Criminal Charges and Court Proceedings

On May 30, McEvoy was arrested and formally charged with:

  • Third-degree theft by deception

  • Third-degree forgery

  • Third-degree impersonation

She has been released pending her first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack.
