Ridgewood NJ, in a surprising move that could impact thousands of electric vehicle drivers, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA) has ordered the removal of 64 Tesla Superchargers from several Turnpike service areas. The decommissioning begins June 6, 2025, with Applegreen Electric set to replace the stations—raising concerns among EV users and clean energy advocates alike.

Why the Tesla Superchargers Are Being Removed

According to an NJTA service advisory, the decision stems from a contract expiration and an exclusive agreement with Applegreen Electric, a company that now manages many service plazas on the NJ Turnpike (I-95). Tesla, however, claims it offered “above-market commercial terms” and proposed co-locating its NACS and CCS1 chargers alongside Applegreen’s infrastructure—but was rejected.

Tesla shared on X:

“NJTA’s decision to remove, rather than add, critical charging infrastructure is a setback for New Jersey’s EV adoption goals of 100% Zero-Emission New Car Sales by 2035.”

Why It Matters: EV Charging Access in the Northeast

The Northeast corridor is one of the fastest-growing electric vehicle markets in the U.S. and relies heavily on the New Jersey Turnpike as a major artery for travel across New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.

Tesla’s Supercharger network is renowned for its reliability, boasting 99.9% uptime and low congestion (<1% waiters). As non-Tesla vehicles from brands like Ford, Rivian, Hyundai, and GM begin using Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS), the removal of these chargers could disrupt road trip planning for thousands of EV drivers.

Applegreen vs. Tesla: Cost and Performance

Some Reddit users claimed Applegreen offers cheaper charging at $0.35 per kWh. But real-time comparisons tell a different story:

  • Tesla Superchargers: $0.20 to $0.45 per kWh (time-dependent)

  • Applegreen Electric: $0.35 to $0.59 per kWh

While Applegreen does provide fast chargers with up to 400 kW capacity and includes NACS plugs, they currently have fewer stalls per location, which could lead to more frequent queues and longer wait times—especially during travel surges.

Tesla’s Backup Plan: Off-Turnpike Superchargers

Tesla anticipated this outcome and has already built 116 Supercharger stalls off the Turnpike. Their onboard trip planner will now reroute vehicles to these nearby locations. Still, EV infrastructure experts argue that reducing access to reliable chargers is a step backward.

“Reliable chargers should be added, not removed,” Tesla emphasized.

Elon Musk, Public Backlash, and Corruption Concerns

Tesla CEO Elon Musk responded to the announcement on X with a blunt comment:

“Sounds like corruption.”

The move has sparked backlash from both Tesla and non-Tesla drivers alike, especially as reliable EV infrastructure becomes essential for meeting climate goals and consumer demand.

What’s Next for New Jersey EV Drivers?

With Applegreen Electric set to operate all charging stations along the Turnpike, concerns remain about charging access, pricing transparency, and charger reliability. The decision also reflects a broader debate: Should highway authorities prioritize exclusive agreements, or pursue multi-provider co-location models that give drivers more options?

Final Thoughts

In a time when the U.S. urgently needs to expand EV charging infrastructure, removing functional and reliable Tesla Superchargers could set a troubling precedent. As the industry grows, diverse, interoperable networks are key to supporting all EV drivers—regardless of brand.

  1. Liberal democrat politics at work
Elon will win the battle as consumers lose (as always in NJ)

    1. Probably because the new contractor wanted control over everything at the site.

  3. Was it all just bullsh–t?

  4. Well, if anybody’s watching the electric car market, it’s down 45% in sales. Some vehicles they can’t even give away. Look at Dodge is offering big discounts on leasing their electric vehicles because no one‘s buying them. Are you going to go spend big money on electric vehicle and then spend big money on electric in New Jersey especially when the rates are going up I don’t think so.

  5. Just more NJ nonsense. You can change it in the November election, but you won’t.
