Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood Walks is releasing the least remarkable story from its Funny Side of Ridgewood Tour:

In 2014, Ridgewood police arrested the village’s public works inspector for stealing $400,000 in quarters from parking meters. Aggregated, the quarters would weigh 11.25 tons, the equivalent of three African elephants.

The break in the case came after a teller at TD Bank, rolling coins for deposit in a private account, collapsed from exhaustion.

To reserve for the Funny Side of Ridgewood, Thursday, June 17, 7:00pm to 8:30pm; or to find better tours, go to

  1. That’s a great story. Coin Boy never gets old.

  2. the sad part is that no one in the town’s management noticed that $400,000 was missing

  3. My feeling is that it was a perk of the job for decades.

  4. Not exactly a perk of the job, but the story goes that it was regularly dipped into for Village personnel treats and entertainment. Coin Boy just ripped the backside out of it. The Village expenses would have been a huge embarrassment had it come out at trial and this is why a very lenient plea deal was reached between the prosecutor and defense. Had it not been for this embarrassing element and the plea deal, under normal circumstances where a trusted employee embezzled this much money, it would most certainly have resulted in prison time.
