Dear Nattering nabobs of negativism,
The summer weather has led to a surge in water use for irrigating. Ridgewood Water implemented Stage II restrictions almost 2 weeks ago. Stage II limits the use of water for irrigation to two days per week. If your street address is an odd number, you may irrigate on Tuesdays and Saturdays only. If your street address is an even number, you may irrigate on Wednesdays and Sundays only. A hand held hose may be used at any time. No irrigation is allowed on Mondays, Thursdays, or Fridays except for a hand held hose.
Many people water their lawns more than necessary for healthy, drought resistant turf. Experts agree that ½ inch of water twice a week will sustain an established lawn within the Stage II limitations. Ridgewood Water technicians can help you reset your automatic irrigation system if needed. Please call our Customer Service Center at 201-670-5520 for assistance.
Our Fire Department is in the process of distributing a Notice of Water Restrictions flyer to every house in the Village. Enforcement has increased significantly. Fines start at $65 for the first offense, and increase for additional offenses. We have a team of personnel who are watching for violations in the act or evidence of violations at various times of day and night. If evidence of watering is found or they respond to a property based on a tip, a notice of non-compliance will be left with the homeowner as a warning. If you have any questions or concerns about watering, you can email it to reportwater@ridgewoodnj.net
Your cooperation in observing Stage II restrictions is appreciated and will help us avoid more stringent levels this year.
Best,
Roberta Sonenfeld

The non compliance warnings are a great idea.
It’s very obvious when I go for an early am walk that residents have their sprinkler systems on, cheating th rules, by watering under the cover of darkness
It’s about time they are stopped since they ruin it for the rest of us who comply
Is VM Sonenfeld actually using the term Nattering Nabobs of Negativism with her public communications? This has to be a joke, but the context slipped away at some point, reducing it to simple wiseassery.
Never let a water crisis go to waste.
This negative post by the queen bee does nothing to win people to your side. Do the other towns that use Ridgewood water also have to abide or get fined also?
Are the regulations being enforced on all towns served by Ridgewood water? I’d like to see/hear how its handled by their village managers.
7:23, to be fair, 5 AM or so is a very typical time for sprinkler systems to be turned on, legally or illegally. The goal of course is not to water people!
7:57, I agree. This usage is insulting and unprofessional (not to mention very dated), and should stop. Ever write a business letter that starts “Dear Stupid”?
1:54 – actually, the goal of watering in the early hours is to get as much water into the ground. Less evaporation takes place and winds are generally lightest in the wee hours of the morning. Most sprinklers will turn on at this time for that reason. Also, it doesn’t draw down the water pressure in the home
I see sprinklers ON in my neighborhood any time of the day. People use sprinklers as they wish. Never seen someone form the village to ticket anybody.
3:28: yeah, that too!
Using sprinklers during strong sunlight is wasteful, being that it’s highly inefficient. I’d rather have people sneaking their sprinklers on in the very early hours than doing it legally during the middle of the day.
