NORTH JERSEY — Hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to be a historic moment for the Garden State, but a new proposal to fund the festivities has ignited a firestorm in Trenton and Washington.

U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) is sounding the alarm over a controversial plan that could see sales taxes spike for families and small businesses living in the shadow of MetLife Stadium. In a pointed letter to Governor Mikie Sherrill and state legislative leaders, Gottheimer made his stance clear: the World Cup should be a win for the economy, not a burden for the taxpayer.

The “30-Mile Radius” Tax Hike: What You Need to Know

The proposal currently under discussion would create a special taxing district around the Meadowlands. Here are the fast facts on the potential impact:

  • The Tax Jump: Sales tax would surge from the state standard of 6.625% to a staggering 9.625%.

  • The Target Zone: This increase would apply to a thirty-square-mile radius surrounding the Meadowlands.

  • The Goal: The revenue would reportedly close funding gaps for World Cup logistics and NJ TRANSIT upgrades.

“These communities didn’t ask for higher taxes; they shouldn’t be punished for living near an event venue,” Gottheimer wrote, emphasizing that many Jersey families are already “stretched too thin” to absorb a 3% sales tax hike.

Protecting Small Businesses and Daily Commuters

Beyond the sales tax, there are growing concerns regarding potential fare hikes on NJ TRANSIT to accommodate the influx of international tourists. Gottheimer is urging state leaders and NJ TRANSIT CEO Kris Kolluri to ensure that New Jersey residents are excluded from any price increases tied specifically to the games.

Gottheimer’s Key Demands:

  1. Exclude NJ Residents: Ensure local families don’t pay for FIFA’s “books.”

  2. Protect Small Business: Prevent local shops near the stadium from becoming less competitive due to higher tax rates.

  3. Federal Funding First: Leverage federal resources rather than local pockets to secure the venue.

“Hosting the World Cup is an incredible opportunity… But we must ensure that success does not come at the expense of families and small businesses.” — Congressman Josh Gottheimer

The Economic Balancing Act

As Vice Chair of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Caucus, Gottheimer is a vocal supporter of the games but argues that the projected billions in economic activity should be enough to cover the costs without a specialized local tax. The debate now moves to Trenton, where Governor Sherrill and the State Legislature must decide how to balance the prestige of the world stage with the cost of living for residents.

  1. If this goes through I will be shopping over the border in Rockland County, NY.

    1. You could be doing that for a long time. I don’t see an expiration date mentioned.

  2. Thank the Helicopter Pilot
Imagine living 30 miles from the Meadowlands and have to pay a 3% surcharge just for a soccer tournament. What happened to lowering costs for her constituents.

    1. No, it’s 30 SQUARE miles in radius!.

I’m sure we were taught that radii were always measured in square numbers.

      1. Actually a 30 square mile area circle would have a radius a bit over three miles.

  3. Soccer is a sport for wussies anyway.
