Ridgewood NJ, the Three Mile Island nuclear plant in Pennsylvania, infamous for the worst nuclear accident in U.S. history, is set to restart by early 2028. The undamaged reactor from the plant will soon be back online, fueling the ever-expanding energy needs of artificial intelligence. This revival is made possible by a 20-year power-purchasing agreement between Microsoft and Constellation Energy, aimed at supporting the tech giant’s growing AI operations.

A Look Back: The 1979 Nuclear Incident

Three Mile Island gained notoriety in 1979 when its second reactor experienced a partial meltdown due to a coolant loop failure. The reactor core overheated, leading to the release of a small amount of radioactive gas and iodine into the atmosphere. While no injuries, deaths, or long-term health effects were attributed to the incident, it remains a key moment in nuclear energy history. Despite the accident, the plant’s first reactor—the one slated for restart—continued to function until 2019, when it was closed due to high operational costs.

AI’s Growing Energy Demand

The decision to bring the reactor back online comes as energy demands from AI are set to skyrocket. By 2029, generative AI applications are projected to consume 1.5% of global electricity, with companies like Microsoft looking for sustainable and reliable energy sources to support their massive computing infrastructure.

Powering the Future

As AI continues to evolve, so does the need for energy-efficient solutions. By resurrecting Three Mile Island’s reactor, Microsoft and Constellation Energy are not only looking to meet growing demand but also to showcase nuclear energy as a vital part of the future energy mix.

  1. Clean, cheap energy!

  2. Ha Ha.
Woke Liberal hypocrites are now OK with nuclear since it will advance their AI population control agenda.
