Washington DC, the US House of Representatives overwhelmingly voted 352-65 in favor of a bill that would ban TikTok in the United States unless its Chinese parent company, Bytedance, sells off its US operations within six months. While the bill’s fate in the Senate remains uncertain, President Joe Biden has indicated his willingness to sign it if it clears both chambers of Congress.

Former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin revealed that he is assembling an investor group to explore the possibility of acquiring TikTok. “I think the legislation should pass and I think it should be sold,” Mnuchin stated during an interview on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Thursday.

Mnuchin’s remarks come shortly after the House passed the bill, which aims to compel ByteDance to divest TikTok to avoid a potential ban in the US. The legislation stems from ongoing concerns among US officials regarding the possibility of China accessing the personal data of American users through the app. This apprehension is fueled by China’s 2017 National Intelligence Law, which mandates cooperation with national intelligence efforts from Chinese businesses. If enacted, a TikTok ban would disrupt the platform’s 170 million monthly active users and impact 5 million businesses, potentially redirecting them and advertisers towards competitors like Meta, Google, and Snap.

Notably, a federal judge previously blocked a TikTok ban proposed by the state of Montana in November, citing concerns about its infringement on First Amendment speech rights. The push for a ban coincides with TikTok’s recent struggles, including its worst quarter for annual user growth in the company’s history.

    1. For anyone who supports Sleepy Joe, name one job you think he’d be good at outside of the Presidency. Or rather what job would you personally hire him for?

    2. Every accusation a confession.

Sorry China, spying on U.S. citizens is our job.

    1. No, you dummy. No one is spying on you, you’re not that important. This is about the demographics of TikTok and the kinds of hateful content being spread on the platform. A lot kids are being exposed to anti-Israel propaganda, so we have to address that.
