Ridgewood NJ, several residents recently wrote to us expressing concern about comments from Village Council members of late hinting that the former Town Garage property may not become a pocket park (open space) as was promised. Mayor Paul Vagianos himself previously indicated he would rather the property be used for public parking.
The subject matter property, located at 120 Franklin Ave., was seized by Village officials via the eminent domain process. As such, and in accordance with the Fifth Amendment of the United States Constitution, the former property owner was paid “just compensation.“
A question arises in connection with a possible change in intended use. That is, is “just compensation” for use as open space equivalent to “just compensation“ for use as a revenue generating parking lot?
The court/judge was informed that the property would be used as a park. Is the former property owner entitled to additional compensation if the Village now plans to generate revenue from the seized property?
Hmm. A flim flam in the making?

No problem. Bond it baby!
Bait and switch at its worst.
The just compensation to the previous owner has nothing to do with the plans for it once it is transferred.
I’ll bet $20.00 that the former owner’s attorney disagrees with your legal opinion.
Nice little place for a soccer field.
we all wish it was still standing, right? the decrepit polluted building
better yet turf it !
Paul must have his way.
Lying to the court? That’s a new low.
That is a prime location for a 20 story apartment building with 50% luxury and 50% section 8 housing. We need to be inclusive and steadfast in our efforts to elevate RW to the status it deserves. I hope this wonderful 5 of the same type VC makes it happen.
Exciting things happening downtown on Mayor Dirtbag’s watch!
No sign of that performing arts center and massive storefront vacancies, but we do get a new bus shelter and a brownfield parking lot!
Fantastic!
this is such a non-story. The past owner is paying for the environmental remediation (win) abandoned building is gone (win) and something better will be in its place (win)
Is there anything happening in town that the blog doesn’t criticize?
Good points. I think the criticism stems from a loss of trust in leadership.
In the end, this was one deal everyone knows, I remember back in the early 90s at the town was going to do this, I remember talking to the owner of that property and he told me that they’re squeezing me out, it was oneshakedown. That was back in 92 and that’s what he told me right to my face. I never forget it. all I know I was told back the 80s never ever do business with the village. They suck, they’re sneaky, they think they’re smart, but they’re just full of shit. They bullshit everybody. Believe me I seen it with my own eyes. I heard it with my own ears. this is back when the village controlled the Ridgewood newspaper.
