Washington DC, in a historic move, former President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Saturday, officially designating English as the national language of the United States. This marks the first time in U.S. history that a single national language has been formally established at the federal level.
What the Executive Order Means
While more than half of U.S. states have already declared English as their official language, the federal government had never done so—until now.
The order also rescinds a 2000 directive by former President Bill Clinton, which required federal agencies and recipients of federal funds to provide services in multiple languages for those with limited English proficiency. However, under Trump’s order, agencies can still provide documents and services in other languages, but the policy shift aims to encourage new Americans to adopt English for better opportunities.
According to a White House fact sheet, the order is designed to:
✅ Promote unity and civic engagement
✅ Enhance government efficiency
✅ Encourage language adoption for greater opportunities
The Impact of a National Language
The move comes as multilingualism continues to rise across the country. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 68 million Americans—or 1 in 5 people—spoke a language other than English at home in 2019. That number has tripled since 1980.
Supporters argue that establishing English as the national language will help streamline government operations and strengthen national identity, while critics worry it could create barriers for non-English speakers in accessing public services.
With this landmark policy, Trump’s administration is reshaping the role of language in government and society—potentially setting the stage for future language and immigration policies in the U.S.
